Okay, well I'm a freshman in high school...and I was thinking about trying out for tennis in the spring, but then today when I was reading this booklet from my school...and I looked in the athletics section, I found out that you need experience for tennis (for my school). Tennis is seriously the only sport that I find myself intersted in, and now I'm really disappointed I can't join because I don't take 'lessons' or I'm not 'trained'.
Well...I used to take lessons once a week when I was like in fourth grade, but then my dad made me quit so I could find more time for my church stuff. But back then I wasn't even that good...and I was really looking forward to getting back on track with tennis this year, but now I'm just like UGH.
here's what it said in the booklet:
Girls' tennis is a spring VARSITY sport. Generally, only 12-16 make the team. Most of the girls who play in the matches have some tennis experience and take lessons.
there was more stuff they talked about..but i found it sort of unnecessary to type out.
IDK if I'm overanalyzing what I read, but I hope I did...so I could have a chance with joining. I was really looking forward to it, and I remember when they were introducting activities at the freshmen orientation, one of the girls said "you don't need experience to join"...but what I read seems sort of different.
anyways.
do you think there's anything I should brush up on, and practice so maybe I COULD get a chance in getting on the team? I don't think tennis is a big thing at my school, but I got kind of discouraged when I read what the booklet said and all.

I'm a freshman and I just joined the tennis team for my high school. I took a week long tennis intensive the week before practice started (as I had never played tennis before, even just messing around) It really helped.
Whatever your handbook says, it never hurts to try out. You might not make the team, but what can it hurt?

^Oh...so basically I should just practice like there's no tomrrow?

Or did you mean you went to this program that helped you brush up on tennis? If so, I don't know if I have the money for that sort of thing, depending on how much it costs, I mean. My dad wouldn't mind paying it for me, but lately I've felt really awkward asking him for money because on my last shopping spree, I nearly maxed out his credit card.

my school is really lenient and i didn't go to anything over the summer, i just showed up at the first practice.
if tennis isn't a big thing at your school there is probably less competition so thats even more reason to try out. get in as much practice as you can before tryouts.

^There's only a varsity team...I sort of wrote that in my first post when I was telling what the handbook said.

^Well..tennis isn't a big thing at my school, but there
are kids who try out..and not everybody makes it. At my school, if a sport isn't extremely popular...they won't have freshmen or JV, and just only have varsity...which means you have to be already experienced in the sport.
I guess I'll just practice on my own, and try to pay for some lessons before try outs.
Does anybody know what the coach asks you to do during try outs and stuff, so I can focus on them?

Don't read the handbook. pfft. Handbooks are for squares. If you like it, then give it a try. You don't have to be pro to be on the team.

It said "Most of the girls who play in the matches have some tennis experience and take lessons." which means that you don't HAVE to take lessons, it is GENERALLY better to and you would have more experience. But hey, if you're good enough, there is no reason why they won't let you on the team.

^ Haha ditttttto. My friends and I always practiced with the Varsity guys, and they trained us over summer or random times after school. I didn't get to go out for Varsity this year, but the coach said I could have been guaranteed a spot.

Well, I play tennis and I'm pretty good.
Tennis here is frickin' competitive so compared to a lot, I'm crap :P
But if you're not very experienced, it'll be hella hard to get onto a High School tennis team.
Best luck to you, though.
Lmfao, I just realized this was a while ago o.o

It's not a big joke if you're serious about it. You can get many scholarships from different colleges if you're committed to the sport.
Tennis is a great sport; it gives a full-body work-out.

I said that being on a team in high school is not a joke. What's funny is that you are neither good at sports nor writing, so I fail to see where you're deriving your confidence.

Tennis is one of the few competitive sports my school has. It's so hard to get onto varsity unless you're a very talented freshmen. I'm lucky enough to be on JV instead of the frosh-soph team.
