Okay.
So there's no law prohibiting
engagement at any age, but the age of legal consent for
marriage is now eighteen in all fifty states.

I assumed there was pressure for her to get married, since you said that she wasn't ready. If she knows she isn't ready, why is she getting married? In hopes that the boy won't leave? Because her parents or her society thinks it's right?
I saw my sister go through this. No one should have to go through that, not even if you made a mistake a made a baby. Marriage is sacred, and it's absolutely devastating when not only do you have this baby, but you forced yourself to marry this man who doesn't really love you.
My cousin was lucky, she got pregnant (not at 16) but married a man that did end up actually loving her. Sadly she lost the baby.
These type of things have to be thought about. If your friend loses the baby but is married to this boy, will that effect the marriage?

you're still really young. while your boyfriend carried out the action of proposing, i don't think your engagment is true or really means anything.
i remember that you posted that you got a boyfriend like only a few weeks ago. it seems very irresponsible of your boyfriend to jump to such a commitment so soon. you're 12 and that is hardly a age to get engaged. also, i think your relationship is very iffy and suspicious.

being engaged is not that horrible. in fact, adults make horrible engagment choices too. being engaged is not important as being married. i know couples who call themselves engaged and i had two friends who were engaged in 5th grade. trust me, no one would whisper in the hallways about his "engagment" because everyone pretty thinks of engagment as a joke if it's between two teenagers.

I think in India (not 100% sure) the fathers look for a male friend in which has a child of the opposite sex, (most of the time the fathers are friends) and if they're pleased with each other's family and their children (assuming their manners, health, morals etc...) they marry their children as young as 8-9 years old. BUT! All they do is make a permanent bond with the kids, and they separate each other to grow up and then come to each other to be together forever.
So basically it takes away the idea of children later on fornicating and having random relationships as they grow older.
So the idea of children being engaged isn't all that bad, but of course in the western world we associate sex with engagement and marriage. It's the norm in our society... premarital sex is even acceptable. In other parts of the world it's frowned upon.
The western thought of this 12 year old being engaged is nasty. But in a worldly view it's just part of a culture(s). Now if the topic read, "12 year old children fornicating after engagement", then maybe I would have to say, "OMFGWTFBBQ?!??!"
Anyways, that's my .02 cents.

^ what the heck are you talking about? apparently you've never actually been to other parts of the world (i.e. Europe) premarital sex is prevalent and from what ive been told, very normal. Heck, you could even watch a few international films to figure that out.
Back to the topic, i do find it odd that this 18 year old guy is asking a 12 year old to marry him, prolly just to get in his pants...well thats just me judging not knowing all the facts but whatever.

I'm technically not allowed to post to his topics anymore, but screw that bullshit.
I, personally, didn't think of sex at ALL when I read that he had "gotten engaged". See, Tama, you don't seem to understand that in India, it's actually going to happen, no matter what the kid says. In their culture, being a virgin is very much sought after, and yes, it helps these children think, "That is my husband, I will save myself for him" but it will also make them sob hopelessly. It's not a game for them. It's life.
But that has absolutely NOTHING to do with this case. His parents DIDN'T plan it, his parents AREN'T planning his marriage, and his boyfriend didn't even propose the cultural way that OUR society does things (Ring). So why should we as Americans even believe in it?
You love blabbering on about American culture, I would think you understood a bit of it by now.
Engagement is cultural, and in American culture, an 18 year old doesn't propose to a 12 year old. Why? Because that is the way it is done, just like in India.
This has nothing to do with sex, and everything to do with this kid thinking marriage and engagement is a game, which it absolutely isn't.
QUOTE
