BANNED driver Paris Hilton launched a legal fight to stay free yesterday after being sentenced to 45 days in jail.
Lawyers for the 26-year-old hotel heiress said theywould launch an immediate appeal against her sentence, imposed by a Los Angeles court yesterday.
Howard Weitzman, defending, said: "I'm shocked, I'm surprised and disheartened.
He said the sentence was "uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous". And he added: "I think she's singled out because of who she is."
Hilton, the star of reality show The Simple Life, was caught driving twice despite still being banned following a drink-drive arrest last September.
She tearfully claimed not to have looked at a document she signed in January saying she was banned.
Hilton told the judge: "I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all." She said advisors had told her she was free to drive for work purposes. But Judge Michael Sauerbranded Hilton a liar as she wept in court.
The judge said: "She wanted to disregard everything that was said and continue to drive no matter what."
Hilton's mother Kathy had laughed out loud when prosecutors said her daughter deserved jail. When the judge sentenced her to 45 days, Kathy asked him: "May I have your autograph?"
Hilton was ordered to report to a women's jail in suburban Lynwood on June 5 or face her sentence being increased to 90 days.
The court had been told that as well as being caught driving twice, she had failed to enrol in an alcohol education programme which was a condition of her probation.
In January, she had admitted driving recklessly under the influence of alcohol in Hollywood in September.
But the same month she was stopped again, with a third arrest in February.
The judge said he would not offer her the option of being electronically tagged or paying to serve her time in a more acceptable jail as some celebrities do.

Hahah crap. That's funny... she kinda deserves it. I wonder if she'll be treated like any other prisoner, in a regular jail? LOL... she probably will. In that case, I actually feel kinda bad for her.

Maybe she'll start to at least skim the documents handed to her before signing them after this.

Well, I wasn't so surprised when I heard that she was arrested
After all, she's known as a "party girl" so obviously she would drink&drive

That's so silly. It won't kill her to serve a month and a half in jail. Half-kill, maybe, but she'll survive.

^ I agree. If anything, it will help her sick "career", since it seems like she just constantly rides off of attention to get herself to the top.

I heard she managed to get her sentence halved.
In addition, she will be getting her own cushy cell.
It's amazing what being a celebrity can do for you, eh?
They should just throw her in with all the other criminals. It's only fair.

^I agree that she should get regular treatment, but if she was thrown into cells with other inmates, wouldn't it be possibly ... I don't know, dangerous?
Considering her celebrity status.

i dont think its fair at all that celebrities get "special treatment" when they go to jail or prison
but it is true that maybe they get the special treatment because they could be in danger or something. because they are famous and all?
but i dont think she should get a nice comphy cell or anything. just something possibly away from the other people. so she wont be in danger.
but i think she deserves to go to jail. ha.

Now THAT reality show I would totally watch!!!
She should NOT get special treatment. She should be thrown in with the other criminals. Just because she's a celebrity doesn't mean she's more DELICATE than all the other new inmates that have to go to prison with normal criminals.

technically yes, but then so should the billions of college kids under 21 with facebook pictures of them drinking. it's just a really grey subject to enforce, and that kind of sucks. :|
