So I'm starting the pig dissection in a week or so. My teacher put up picture links for the dissection. sick.gif I clicked on the mouth and I was already grossed out so I didn't bother clicking the others. I don't know. My teacher said our pig practical test/quiz is worth like 10% of our final grade or something so I'm pretty scared about that.

What should I expect? shrug.gif
How was your previous experience with the dissection?
Any extremely helpful links?

Thanks thumbsup.gif

I have dissected a fish and a cow eye before. It wasn't that bad.
Next year I am taking anatomy class, a bunch more dissections to go for me!

It was really gross. My teacher last year didnt care what we did with it, so lets just say most kids mutilated theirs. sad.gif

It's not that much worse than the other disections I had to do last year. But if you're going to have to have a partner, maybe try to find a partner (probably a guy) who wants to do everything himself? lol that way you could just watch, and not have to cut on anything. _smile.gif

I dissected a fetal pig during my freshman year of high school (so, four years ago, for your reference), and although I was uneasy about it, locating all the organs and such on paper really wasn't difficult at all. I didn't have any trouble with it.. which is probably why I don't remember much about it. >_>;

I did my in 7th grade...so that was a LONG time ago for me. 6 years? approximately. It's really not that bad. Slightly gross, but no big deal.

I dissected a fetal pig freshman year... I thought it was awesome.

I'm taking anatomy & physiology this year and we've been dissecting a cat, which was fun at first, but now it just smells really bad. Our cat's name is Alphie and apparently, he died of old age. :)

What the... poor piggy. That could SUPPLY FOOD for someone! =X

I never had the opportunity to do it, but I DID however dissect a frog. Actually, my boyfriend did it. I ketp gagging because the liquid that preserves it made me want to throw up.

Hey if you dissect the stomach, hopefully it won't have digested food in it!

When my boyfriend cut open the frog's stomach, it had digested fodo in it and it looked like poop chunks -- horrible. sick.gif

I didn't feel squirmish or anything.
I mean, I'm a girl who is deathly afraid of knives, of needles, of bugs, etc. and I have all those kind of stupid fears... but I found it pretty interesting actually, haha. The only problem I have with dissections is you can come out smelling like crap... as in the instance of dissecting frogs, which I did in freshmen year of HS.

Just keep an open mind, try not to get any crap on yourself.

Dissection seems really disgusting at first, but it's actually not that bad since you have gloves and all that protection.

Just make tiny incisions and be patient. Make sure you've like nearly memorized the directions before you start too.

The worst part is the.. smell, really. huh.gif

Some structures may be difficult to get through. My group and I had such a hard time cutting through the sides of the mouth and the breast! But noticing organs shouldn't be hard since they'll be fairly big. It's a fetal pig, after all. Be careful of liquid oozing out. Things do look pretty nasty but you get used to it. Have fun!

well,

I did it earlier this year. It honestly isn't that bad. It's the smell that really got to me. I got a huge headache after that and had to run to the nurse. sick.gif but after, I was ok. It's actually quite interesting.... I think.

chew some really strong gum...and breathe through your mouth

Don't worry too much, after the initial shock of having to look at and cut, it's fine. In fact, there's probably going to be a couple of goof-offs in your class, anyway. Everyone in the class named their pig something silly (like Weinterschnitzpigzizzles) and one person even chopped the poor thing's head off. mellow.gif

i did that for honors biology my freshman year. it really wasnt that bad. they do smell, though.
JustAnotherTeenageLoser
we just did that last week. i'm a vegetarian & was really grossed out at first, didn't think i was gonna so anything. but you get used to it & it's actually quite interesting. the smell is disgusting, but even that wasn't as bad the second day. hell, i even ended up holding both the pig itself & the heart without gloves in the end. just keep at open mind...and chew a really strong gum for the smell[i would also recomend scented lotion & a body spray so that you don't stink after as well...]

But isn't there that ethics thing for Bio and Anatomy/Physiology classes that states you won't cut it up any more than you need to? I know that most teenagers, especially guys, wouldn't care about that because they like bloody/gory stuff...but sheesh.

Well we it was optional for us on like the last day of school my seventh grade year. I didnt wanna do it, but i also didnt wanna be the only guy that didnt do it. So I disected it with the only girl that did it. And it was disgusting. Absolutely DISGUSTING! But you'll get over being sad after you done.

OMG we couldn't do it this year, because well we might, but most likely not cuz of the last like few days left and changing class rooms and stuff, but I WANT TO DO THIS, I'm in anatomy right now and we can do it, but the closet we got to disecting it was ont he computer program, WHICH WAS AWESOME, I want to cut up some baby pig. I love this stuff.
