Full Version: The "Don Imus Controversy" (rutgers women's basketball, nappy headed ho's, etc)

I'm a few days late on this but ... what a old dirty racist bastard, Imus is. For those who are not familiar with him, he is an American comedian and talk show host. He criticized the rutgers women's basketball team (the starting 5 whom are all african-american) by calling them "nappy headed ho's". There's a player on that team that graduated from our high school (who is the only white on that team), and I wonder how she re-acted to this.

QUOTE
NEW YORK - Don Imus was under fire, his job was in jeopardy, and his big mouth was to blame.

This was 1969, at a small radio station in Stockton, Calif., and the nascent disc jockey was the target of outrage for rattling local sensibilities by uttering a bad word on the air: “hell.” Imus was fired, but — in what became a continuing pattern — the controversy only boosted his profile and career prospects.

The up-and-down arc of Imus’ nearly 40 years in broadcasting bottomed out Thursday after his mouth finally went too far. The veteran DJ, who mingled political punditry with his penchant for pushing the boundaries of bad taste, was fired for ridiculing the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.”

Damn, he deserved to get fired! What a racist bastard. This just proves my point more that a lot of white people in this country are dirty. I understand that. But I know that the blacks got really offended (which I assume) from his comment. Seriously though, the blacks need to chill down. Just take Imus as a whitebread redneck in their heads, and get over it. You don't see many asians or hispanics wilding out as much as blacks when they get offended from a racial comment. I'm just saying. But Imus deserved to lose his job for this. I have the right to verbally treat Imus like shit now. Was he formerly in the KKK or something? Seems like it. Hey whites, think about it. (For those who make racist jokes towards other races) ... just think about. This is the reason why you guys make black people go crazy like animals. Don Imus. Why can't we make peace in this country? Imus went too far ... He should've said at least something like "Just kidding folks" or some shit like that, after that comment. What a dumbass.

He mainly did it for attention. He wanted people to talk about his show.

honestly, i would love to see his dumb ass fired because racist comments like that cannot be said and then just recanted by saying, "i didn't mean, i'm sorry, i'm not racist."

however, at the same time, part of me is annoyed that he says a one liner and people are calling for his dismissal while for the hot97 tsunami song, only two people were fired. i wanted to see the whole damn station fired for even letting the song get cleared.

either way, what Don Imus said was horrible. and he hasn't done a great job of apologizing. he's been digging himself deeper and deeper. al sharpton (though i'm not a big fan of his. he's too quick to jump on the "racism" card) went on his radio show and Don Imus was completely dismissive/defensive. he constantly said "you people" and instead of saying congresswoman (he was doing a phone call with this african american congresswoman) he said "that woman".

Imus has been apologizing ever since the incident but wow, he went waaaaay over.

I can't believe he called them nappy headed hos.

lostgrl16
hes known to make racial remarks though. if it was said on accident as a joke HAHA whatever, then he would've apologized during that show but he did so after people started complaining about him
salcha4u
If he DIDN'T get fired, I'm sure they would be lots more controversy.
WHIMSICAL 0NE
I'm not saying it wasn't a big deal (old, well educated man being racial) but I think it got blown way out of proportion. shrug.gif

He's KNOWN for making these types of remarks. It's pretty much where he gets his name - stirring up controversy and going for low-bellied jokes/remarks with high-profile interviewees on his talk show.

Granted, he stepped over the line with this one.

But how much do you want to bet that if he were a few years younger (because as it is, only the older generation listens to him now), he'd get picked up by another radio station and continue with the racial slurs?

But isnt Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson just as bad, if not worse? They seem to be all over whats going on right now, but they've made plenty of offensive statements too in the past, and havent apologized or even recognized them.

What Imus did was bad, but I feel like he's truly sorry for what he did. He's apologized, what else can he do? Bow down and worship them? I'm not blaming the team - they've handled things appropriately. I'm just ticked off and tired of all the activists who keep insisting everyone's racist. So many people in our country, both black and white are racist. I know a large majority of older people in the south are... it's just how they were raised. They were raised at a time when everything was segregated. But they keep things to themselves, and know when and when not to say something. I think Imus just made the mistake of saying what he was thinking.

I think he deserves to pay some consequences, but I think it went too far when he was fired. I think him being dismissed from work for two weeks was more appropriate. And maybe along with that, as his own decision, maybe make a donation to the school's basketball program, to help out the people he critisized? Him being fired doesnt effect the basketball team at all.

That's some nappy headed hos right there. Celebrate free speech. Face the facts, some girls did have nappy hair, and based Rutger's reputation, chances are they were hos. He was just tellin it like it is yo.

Beyond words.

The sad truth, is that the Black Community is the enabler.

How?

Allowing garbage pass as Hip Hop. So when an album is compiled of nothing but derogatory terms for women and other slanderous words against the Black community, it comes off as acceptable. As opposed to the albums where the streetwise rhymes, talent and emotional sincerity overshadow political incorrectness.

So...

The defense is, "In Snoop Dogg's rhymes...," or, "Rapper Cam'Ron said in his song...," or, "50 Cent is a platinum gangster rapper and the niggers love him!"

Instead of...

I'll never call you my bitch, or even my boo,
there's so much in a name, and so much more to you
-Common

We will be the downfall of our own community if we do not stand up for what's right and stop acting like niggas.

i was watching the view and they brought up a good point on how this is a BLACK & WHITE situation. For Blacks this is more of a racism thing, and for White people its more on Freedom of speech.

i really dislike what he said and he shouldnt of said it but he again shouldnt of been fired. I guess i would feel a different way if i were black but im like in the middle of this whole situation. There are so many people that have done this before but we have let it gone by.

Fcuk an Al Sharpton.
Fcuk a Don Imus.
xcaitlinx
why are people overreacting so much to a stupid comment that WASNT EVEN THAT BAD?!? nappy headed hoes? big deal. ive heard so much worse.

what baffles me the most is the fact that rappers like ludacris were backing up barack obama and hillary clinton when they came out against don imus. are you kidding me? the people who write lyrics to raps which are 10x worse than 'nappy headed hoes' have the balls to act like don imus is satan? talk about hyprocritical.

don imus is known for making racial slurs. this obviosuly isnt the first time hes said anything like that. we do have a first amendment stating 'freedom of speech', im not sure if any of you are aware, and also 'freedom of choice', and therefore if you do not appreciate don imus and his comments, you have every right to not listen to him.

the fact of the matter is, if it was a black man who had made the comment, there would be no problem at all. im completely against racism and i believe his comment was unnecessary, but i believe it was blown completely out of proportion. i suppose that every other comedian and talk show host who has ever made a politically incorrect racist joke/comment should be fired as well, to make things fair. i guess we wouldnt have a lot of entertainment anymore.
kryogenix
I'm offended that you called black people monkeys.

The irony.
