Sorry but I'm so frustrated with it's four letter character limit! With it you cannot search for very very commonly used threads. Here are some examples
  • cb4
  • users with only parts of names you can remember
  • the words: are, and, you, & the
Those are only three examples. And they are pretty commonly used.

PLEASE take the character limit off the search bar

Yikes, the cb4 search query will definitely not lead you anywhere. :x Still, you can search for three letter words using a plus sign. E.g., amy+lee.
Intercourse.
Ah I use to always have this problem until I thought of the + sign wink.gif Mona said that though.

There are instances though when you CANT use the + sad.gif

I think that this is a really good point...

For the time being, why not just use the google search? Type in "whatever you want here site:createblog.com"

Google doesn't refresh its search database often enough to make it very useful for searching forums such as CB. Furthermore, due to the dynamic nature of CB, Google can't index everything on the forums. And finally, the CB search tool offers options for more refined searching than what Google can offer.

You might be able to search by topic title, but Google doesn't offer the granularity to, say, search for a particular word, and results come back in a haphazard way—not organized by date, for example.
ItsSelvy
I don't like the disorganized feeling you can get when you type in Google. And Google doesn't update as often so its less accurate. I just wish that they could take off the character limit. Wouldn't that just be easier?

Actually, searching for "amy+lee" doesn't do anything for me...it actually doesn't come up with any results at all.

It didn't even work in Entertainment. I swear, it had previously given me results. :3 I'm going to try different search queries.

+ is a special character in IPB searches. It means "the next work has to be included in the search". In other words, a search for amy+lee means that the thread has to contain both "amy" and "lee", whereas amy lee will return threads that contain "amy", "lee", or both words. Similarly, a search for "amy lee" (including the quotes) matches the literal string amy lee. That explains why your search may not have turned up any results.

This used to be such a pain searching for 'God' in the debate forum... yea, it is irksome.

Why do you even have to search for "God"? All 100 God threads are pretty much active at any given time. tongue.gif

hi,

the reason why theres a 4 character limit is because its the default (and most effective) setting for mysql fulltext's search. mysql is the database engine behind this site. lowering this value will increase the storage space requirements dramatically, while not necessarily guaranteeing an increase in effectiveness.

i dont know why anyone would search for common three letter words like "are", "and", "you" and "the" as it will return most if not all of the topics ever made here.

and you can search part of a keyword (including names) by using the asterisk (*).

im going to close this topic but if you have any further questions / suggestions regarding this feel free to pm me.
