I'm in a philosophy class, and one of the subjects on the syllablus is discussing specifically what art is. There were toooons of responses, ranging from anything that's pleasing to the eye, or saying that anything and everything is art. There was even an article in my Spanish class's magazine about whether this rather nice looking pile of trash was art.

What/how do you consider or define art?

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. (I don't know who made this up?)

Art is the elimination of the unnecessary. -Pablo Picasso

Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth. -Pablo Picasso

You can't be specific about art. Art is spontaneous and art is structured. There's too many ways of defining what is or what isn't. Sometimes it's about perspective or light or sometimes it's ... abstract expressionism. Or maybe Mondrian. It's not something you can fully and absolutely understand, kind of like music. Take John Cage's composition, 4'33" for example. Is that music? You should check it out if you haven't heard it before. thumbsup.gif
