Packaging is really important to software.
pandamonium
well that is the thing i notice first, the packaging. i look at that too when i buy things. but the only reason why i am buying it is that windows does really need an upgrade.

I am not going to buy it just because of the packaging, I just mentioned it cause i also had pictures to go along with the thread.

but thanks for the response i really appreciated it. it made my day.

just close this if everybody responds like that.

I ordered the express upgrade, which is free (plus $10 shipping).

I don't know if I'll install it on my computer though, because of this. I think it's really retarded..
Plus, hackers already have their hands on Vista.. I think it'll be a bit safer if I stay with XP for a while longer.

where did you get the express upgrade???

my friend just got a new computer last month and she had XP with it but they said she can upgrade to Vista anytime.

Some computers have Vista already built-in (like Dell), but you can't install it until the Vista release date..

You can find the express upgrade here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getr...essupgrade.mspx

yuppers im gonna get the ultimate!! i think i might wait a few months down the road first because i want them to get a service pack out or somthing first
pandamonium
QUESTION: If i buy the upgrade will i be able to put it on my laptop and my desktop computers [like use it twice]???
Macintosh
I got the express upgrade.
For Sony's Vista Upgrade you can only apply if you bought your PC/Notebook throughout a certain period of time, I believe it's the same with Dells.

Yep, that's how my new Dell that I got for xmas is.

I think its free... either that, or my parents already paid for it lol. It should be here in about two weeks. laugh.gif

If its an Express Upgrade, I wonder if I'll lose everything I have on my computer, or if it'll just upgrade itself and leave all my files and info?

Wow, Dell processed your order that quick?
Sony is taking a long time to process my order.
hmm_dragon
You cant use the same CD KEY for a different computer!! u would have to buy a second copy to get it on the other computer!!

I'm actually holding off on a new computer to get Vista.

Yeah, I think it's similar to antivirus softwares, where you can only install different types on one/two/three/+ computers.

I don't feel impressed enough with this software to buy it with my own money. Of course, if my parents offer me the upgrade.... biggrin.gif

The navigation seems to be very similar to Mac, from what I've seen so far. I think the safest way to buying this system, is just to get a totally new Vista computer from HP/Dell/Sony.

If you don't need a new computer, why would you need a new system, anyways?
(( I know, I know..Intrest & upgrades. Well, aren't we all anxious to get into the future? rolleyes.gif ))
hmm_dragon
lets just say dont do it! lol or microsoft will either try to sue you or make u pay a big fine! because the cd key is really only ment for one computer.. other wise u would have to pay for a second cd key to use it on a second computer..

Vista has a dock?!
I've never heard that before..

But they do have prettier themes and nicer icons..

I'd rather get OS X Leopard when it comes out.. But I don't have a Mac to install it on. sad.gif

Well, I'm getting Vista in the mail soon. I don't think I'm gonna install it. Not for a while at least.
I'll make my brother install it on his laptop first and see what happens. _smile.gif

If you upgrade it, your user settings and old files are kept. (See here.)

Really? But what if on the second computer, you didnt register to sign up for automatic updates? Then they would have no way of knowing that the cd has been installed on another computer. At least thats how it works with my anti virus program.

^ Thats just a guess though. Or there's probably ways of getting a cd key for the 2nd computer on the internet, or with a program If it wouldnt let you use the same key. shifty.gif

ya all that would work but u have to activate it! so it sends info on what computer its on..

no i dont think the activation part does that. for "activation" it sends the ip address of your internet and what kind of internet you are going to use. thats why adobe told me for activation. because for adobe I had to Activate and Register, and i didnt know the difference.

i really dont think i need another key for putting it on my laptop but i will see.

Windows activation works differently—it sends some information on your hardware configuration, making it very difficult to put the same copy on another machine. (It won't run on a computer if two or more "vital" components change.)

I know. But you said that it's navigation is similar to that of Mac's, so I implied that you meant that it had a dock on the desktop.. But I don't think that it's anything like Mac. Mac is wayyy better than anything Windows will ever release.

Hmm, it has a sidebar. Which is pretty much like a dock for widgets. Kinda useless, IMO.

But it does have some interesting features like Speech Recognition and the new Sleep mode..
And the Windows SideShow thing seems cool, but you'd need a new laptop with the secondary display... ermm.gif

Experience has taught me to not trust any Microsoft operating system until after it has had at least one service pack released. And even then, you should always ask yourself "Why didn't I just buy a Mac?" just to make sure you're still open to more sound options.

i thought about that. but macs were too expensive and i wasnt all that into them when i was younger, all i wanted was a computer. then my mom got a laptop from dell so it was too late to even buy a mac book. so it was too late even thought i still would of wanted to buy one.

Did anyone get it?

Well I would want my products packaged nicely....
hmm_dragon
ive used it before it came out a few times its pretty cool!! but it needs a pretty powerful system to run good! other wise its slow.. plus i have to wait till i get a part of my computer back then i will buy it! but i'll let you know right now its not for games right now till prolly later down the road!
think!IMAGINARILY
I've heard that it takes up a lot of your processor..
I have AMD Turion 64 X2 1.6GHz and 1GB RAM on the laptop that I want to install Vista on. It's Vista capable, but I heard that it might run more slowly. ermm.gif

Yeah, I'll make my brother install it first this weekend.

your computer can handle it!! it doesnt take that much more power just sucks alot in games right now!

Yup. I'll be getting it in the next few months. When I get a new computer. I'm getting an Alienware.
hmm_dragon
nice!! alienware is expensive though! thats why id rather build my own i just dont get the cool case that its in hehe!!
xDiloveyouu
im guessing you, pandamonium, already know this by now (from reading engadget/gizmodo) that all the vista upgrades sucks balls.
it forces you to install vista over your winodows xp. and then invalidating your xp key so you cant use that windows xp anymore. Just get vista ultimate full, oem it 200 bucks if your pr0 ;)
EddieV
I might as well get Vista when it comes out on new computers purchased...
Kontroll
I wouldn't even plan on buying it this early. It's new....there are going to be some bugs with it. Might as well as wait for a little while.

they didnt totally put it down on engadget its just that there were some downs but they said if your up for it then buy it, its just it might make my computer run slower cause my computer isnt very great but it is very decent so i might just stick with xp for another year. im scared my computer might run slow as hell.
sprezzatura
I would get it once I buy a new computer, because the computer I am using right now doesn't have the features needed for Vista.

If I am buying Vista, I would so wanna buy Ultimate.

Well my stepdad definitely doesn't like Windows Vista. I don't know anything about computers, but it was something like...nothing worked with it because you had to update stuff? Anyways, he also said there were other problems with it, so I guess I'm just going to stick to Windows XP.
smoke
I got to use it the other day on my teachers laptop. She was showing it off, lol. It's really cool and user friendly. It looks so sleek. Sure, it has some bugs, but what OS hasn't in the first few months?

I can't wait to get it. It's amazing. And Direct X 10 and Halo 2 for PC? *drools*
CLYDE
I'll get it once all the bugs are gone.... and once I get some cash. Same plan for a PS3. My boyfriend has an XBOX 360 and his brother is getting a Wii so I'll wait and get a PS3 for myself.
MasterNe0
Vista has ALOT of problems.

the main thing is: lack of drivers

Only big thing right with vista is better security

but if i was you, I would wait awhile when I see it improve before getting it. Tons of people are having problem with it and now with dell only offering it with their new systems, it going to get more and more troublesome.
Amay
No, but it's freaking hottt.
Seriously.
Aerialington
I'll get Vista when they finish working out the kinks. Also, its a waste of money unless you get the premium or ultimate packages.

I really don't think a flashier Windows XP is worth the price Microsoft asks for it.
Detective
no. well not until i get a new computer. But i heard some good things about it.
bigitchbay
Is the express upgrade the same as the"full" upgrade? Do both of them have the same properties? same capabilities? or is the express upgrade a shorter/less capable version of the FULL thing?
