A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.
"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."
It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.
A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.
John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.
"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.
Initially, contestants were handed 8-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.
"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."
Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.
After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.
"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

This has been on the news sooooo much for the past few days. I live in Sacramento, where 107.9 plays. So, it's been such a huge deal here. I think it's pretty sad. She died trying to win a Wii - it's a little pathetic. Her family is trying to charge the hosts of the show that the contest was being held in with criminal charges. I don't know how they would hold up because it was her choice to continue. ANYWAY. The radio station already fired, like, ten people because of this.

I've been hearing a lot about this. It was ludicrous. Person died, kids lost their mom, and several people lost their jobs over a Wii.
Ridiculous. Could have at least thought about it.

doesnt the water like, make your blood thinner or something like that?
i heard about it at school.. she should sue the radio people. my teacher told me that the radio people signed something where it says that they have nothing to do with her health or something like that. THATS BULL =X she should sue them.
i mean, i'd rather spend my money and BUY THE Wii than risking my life for 3 kids..

Taking in too much water, especially in such a short time, throws your body off balance. There's a certain level of water that needs to be maintained. Not to mention, acidity levels change as well, among other things.
The contestants were warned before they actually participated and it was their prerogative to consider the effects on their health. Not that the radio station or show is without fault; they should've done their research beforehand.

I think this contest was a complete and utter mistake; I live in Sacramento and I used to always listen to 107.9, Morning Rave, and they do some pretty dumb stuff there. Seriously though, don't they need like official approval from the station to do something like this? She didn't even win the contest. It's not worth it; why not just go out and buy a Wii?

Ugh, for all you people saying it was a pathetic way of dying. She must've not known about being able to die about taking in too much water. If anyone who did the contest knew, I don't think they'd participate or they wouldn't overdo their limit. So yeah.. I feel bad for her & her kids. :[ Nobody would die for a Wii unless they're.. nuts. o_o

That's really sad. I guess too much water is NOT bad for you if you drink it in intervals, right? I drank 6 bottles of water in one day a while back, and I was fine, but I don't remember inhaling the water like she did. Poor family.

Oh dear.
One part of me feels sorry for her.
One part of me wants to say this is all pathetic and idiotic.
One part of me laughs because this is probably not the greatest publicity for that radio station.
I think they should bury her with a Wii to compensate.
And I would not do the same for my kids. It's just a game. Personally, I think American kids are spoiled (myself included). It was horrible she had to die that way...The things parents will do for their kids.
