Gosh i hate it cause i graduated high school and everything was fine until they pushed you out the door to go to college. and NOW i dont know what to do with my life.

Well my problem is that i dont know what i wanna major in and do for the rest of my life. ermm.gif

I am up at 5 in the morning still looking through courses and colleges to transfer to but then it gets so confusing cause then you need prerequisites for everything. and you have to apply at this time or else you dont get accepted until fall. its been so long since i had a decent night of sleep.

the two majors that i am deciding on are completely different: Graphic Design and Nursing ? sad.gif

Option 1. Graphic design : i love it and i know i would have fun during school cause it would be something i like doing. but then again how stable is this job? will i make a sufficient amount of money? But the downside to graphic design is that i dont know if i could find a job right after college. its tricky. i know exactly 3 people that graduated as graphic designers and were out of a job.... that scares me the most.... sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Option 2. Nursing : i could do nursing but it takes 4 years for a RN but i still have to get accepted to the program so i could do nursing then take the prerequisites... i would only have to work hard for the amount that it takes then this job will take care of me. it pays very well and its the second most stable job in america. and plus my mom is a nurse and she is the only one working in the family so she is able to support all of us. so this would take around 5 years or i could just become an associate.

Option 3. GD & LPNOr another way i could go is take graphic design for 4 years then if i dont have a job take up LPN (another kind of nurse) which will only take a little over a year. so i could have both.

I just dont know what i should do.. I am begging for some guidance and assistance console.gif . I needed to vent out, especially on createblog cause some of you might know the situation that im going through right now. And just so you know i am starting my second semester of college and majoring in graphic arts.

Hmm.. Do you have an interest in the field of nursing? You have to make sure that it's SOMETHING you want to do. wink.gif You could always do it. Seriously, 4 years isn't that big a deal because there are doctors who had to go to school for 8+ years full time in order to be where they are today.

As for graphic design: you can always go back to this, you know. You can do it, but keep in mind that not everyone who majors in this can easily find a job. You could possibly do the whole nursing thing, then come back to graphic design and do it as a side job. Be financially safe than sorry, is what I always thought.

Anyway, I want to become a dentist. I've always been interested in biology and science. I don't want to become a surgeon or anything because it seems more difficult and I'm not really into the whole idea of cutting people open and such. :P I was planing on becoming a pharmacist, but after researching and such, it didn't interest me as much. Plus, I would have to be a chem or biochem major, and I'm not so big on chem. At least bio is more interesting! tongue.gif

Hope this helps.

Oh, and if you don't mind me asking, when did you graduate? I thought you would be graduating during the summer and already be in college... I'm confused. sweating.gif

Oh and mods, this could be moved to interests > school , since it deals with such issues.

i dont have a great interest in nursing ermm.gif but it is very stable as you said and thats what my mom wants me to do be a nurse. I mean i know i could do it if i tried hard enough.

And i did think about doing nursing first the going back to GD as a hobby later on. but yea i know what you mean about being financially safe. i just dont think going back to college after all that studying for nursing is a good think, especially when i might be working long shifts and trying to pay back my college loans.

ugh i just dont know, cause lol im not the typical smart asian i just get average grades. thats why i think i put myself down about being a nurse.

EDIT xxxx

I am already in college, i am started second semester.

thanks for responding just_dream & happy belated birthday btw ! biggrin.gif

Oh hehe thank you. hug.gif

Well that is true. I mean, it can be tiring. My sister tried going back to college after she graduated, but when she started taking a few courses to get a master's degree, she realized it wasn't the "thing" for her, so she quit. Plus, she graduated from high school with salutatorian title, so it was funny that she told me that story!

Well, you should follow your dreams, but there are a lot of consequences. My boyfriend's brother-in-law went to college for graphic arts (or it might've been graphic design!) and he couldn't find a job after that. Now he's a video game tester, but he did work various different jobs before that. It's an okay job, but I don't think it's exactly what he wanted to do with his life after college. Oh well, he's still doing that job, so I guess he's fine.

Also, nursing school may be pretyt expensive, compared to the latter, right? So if you DO do nursing, you will have to really be into it, otherwise it'll be a waste.

And don't pur yourself down! I mean, maybe academically in high school you might've not had the best grades and all, but who knows? College changes people. I mean, even now I'm getting the WORSE grades of my life, and I graduated in the Top 22 (the last 6 people had the same GPA!) back in high school! So really, you shouldn't put yourself down because you have the potential to succeed. _smile.gif

Plus, my boyfriend is still unsure what he's going to do with the rest of life. So you're not the only one. :]

Trust me, I've been there.

Let's see I was a nursing major at one time. I figured it would be a pretty stable career field to go into so I thought I would give it shot even though beforehand I had no desire to become a nurse. If you really have no interest I suggest you not go into this field. I know to people that recently graduated with degrees in Nursing only because they wanted job security and both highly dislike working in the Nursing field.

I'm a graphic design/Interactive Media major and I love it. happy.gif I'm so happy to finally be doing something I have a passion for. But that's the key, having a passion. I don't know if you know but the burnout rate for those entering in the Graphic Design field is about 3 -5 years. This because it's hard work and it's a career field where you will mostly have to be working your way from the bottom (very bottom), up. Also, thousands of people graduate with Graphic Design degrees each year which means in some places jobs a scarce. Have an excellent portfolio is essential to securing a job, even more important than what GPA you graduate with. In fact, a lot of employers won't even ask you see your grades, it's all about the portfolio and what you can do for them. Job security is a valid concern to have and it's one of mine. But I guess I'll just have to see, I'm going to remain optimistic.

Yeah, I hope that helps! If you need to know further info about Graphic Design feel free to ask. happy.gif

I wanted to do Nursing too, but I've been told not so go into that career by nurse friends. They said that it's a really difficult job and sometimes, the doctors aren't very nice and kinda of look down upon you. But then again, if you really have a passion for being a nurse, then I'd say go for it, because you're basically guaranteed a job. As for the four years thing, most stable jobs require you to have 4 years of college and have a license of practice, especially in the medical field. However, for two more years, you could be a APN (advanced practice nurse), which allows you to diagnose and treat chronic illnesses. If you're deciding between LPN and Nursing, I'd say go with Nursing, just for the sake of.

As for Graphic Design, I knew somebody who majored in something similar to that area. She ended up drawing cartoons and stuff for kids tv shows, which was pretty neat until they advanced technology. She ended up going to China to teach English, because the salary she was earning wasn't sufficient. Graphic Design is fun major, but the salary and job availibility is low. However, if that is something that you truly love and that stuff doesn't matter to you, then go for it. I'm just saying is all.

Have you ever thought about teaching? Because then you could go into either of those careers with a focus on teaching. There's always a need for teachers, and you'll get to "major" in what you like, but with a focus on education. I'm not sure how much of your time will be directed at teaching it, but that might be a path you may wish to pursue. I don't know. Just brainstorming.

Oh, I know your pain, just a month or two ago I was freaking out about the same thing, however I had about 10 options instead of 2 blink.gif

First things first, RELAX. Breath in and out. . .
It's really okay, not everyone knows exactly what they want at such a young age.
and Remember, the things we want change when we get older.
Don't worry, this is a process that takes a while, you don't figure it out all in one night.
You could do one thing, and then some years down the road find yourself in a complete
opposite field, so remember to just make sure you are happy.

Okay. . . First of All,

Graphic Design - By the way, don't be fooled about the money. I've researched Illustration and Graphic Design because I was interested in it for Art school [more illustration then graphic design], but I've read up that Graphic Designers make a lot. Think about it, every company, every internet site, most businesses small and large need a designer. The internet is taking over, people get payed ALOT when they do design, and there are just so many paths you can take. . .so many. And I think it'd just be as hard to get a job in Graphic Design as in any other field. Perhaps consider an Iternship somewhere to get you started. And the schools usually have connections and links to great jobs and such, and you just build up a portfolio and resume, not everyone starts off big, but it's not far-fetched of hearing about a graphic designer that can make up to 6 figures a year, so I wouldn't worry about the money at all. Plus, you seem to really love it. And THAT is what is important in the long run. And besides, you don't have to work JUST in computers. . . you can also be a Creative Director or Art Director for magazines and such, really, graphic design is such a huge field. . .

Nursing - My mother was a nurse at one point before she became a doctor. She loved it and all, and as a nurse you really do make money and have the satisfaction of helping people everyday. It's a hard job though, long hours, a lot of schooling. And actually I think you make less then Graphic Designers. Although healthcare is important, sometimes they don't pay as much [which is sad, but the same goes for teachers, unless you are a president of a college or a dean].

Good luck with all of this btw,
Worst comes to worst, you can always change majors.
Perhaps Major in Graphic Design, but also have a 2 year nursing degree on the side.
There are a lot of options, def talk to a career counselor if you have a chance. happy.gif

Hell, I'm second year Uni and I'm still not sure what to do.

Shit, second year and I;m still posting here, garhhhhskjdfknde.
show_me
Uh, I'm going to Boston University and i'm going to get laid everyday and major in smashing poosay. See you there!

Hey don't do nursing though, I have a filipino male friend who is miserable because of that. I make fun of him every opportunity I have too .
.fire
I literally just ot offered another degree in uni, now I'm very conflicted. What you should do is talk to people in that course and ask them about the job prospects and the courses given. Thats what I'm doing RIGHT NOW!
Slowguy1421
I have a sister your age tongue.gif . After she graduated High school, she joined the Navy.

It was so random of her because we thought she would be going straight to college. But during that time she's been away from home because she just didn't like staying at home all the time. So she decided to do something about her life and so I guess her choice was the NAVY.

I know how you feel! cry.gif

I don't know what i want to do either. cry.gif or if there'll be job opportunities. cry.gif
I just know digital media, desktop publishing, printing, communications technologies, and graphics majors sound fun and i would most likely loveee it. but i dunno if i have the talent for any of it. :\

everyone i know in my city is going to major in something common. mellow.gif like psychology. i feel so alone. half the time you cant even find the majors i might like on colleges' lists of majors.

one of my teachers majored in accounting and is now a keyboarding teacher. so i guess you never know where you're going to end up. mellow.gif
mznikki
First off, you're not alone. Also although you may graduate with a certain degree, it doesn't mean that's what you're going to do for the rest of your life, you may end up doing something completely different. Its not set in stone that what you major in your second semester freshman year in college is what you must do for the rest of your life. I know people who are still undecided, and some are still until thier junior year and realize what they really want to do (kinda late but better late than never). They took a lot of basic courses they were interested in, and also talked to an academic advisor from school, and they'll talk to you about courses your college has and also job opportunities (in my school they do at least) and provide you with internships so you can test the waters of the job seeing if you like it or not. sometimes you may try some place like this girl i knew was majoring in psychology, but took an internship at a lawfirm as a secretary, and decided after that she wanted to major in law instead. So really you never know, and if you feel that you must pick a major now- you really don't depending on what college you're at and thier requirements, cause you need to take general education courses anywho. You could also major in nursing and minor in graphic deisgn or something like that or do what my firend is doing, double majoring, if you really want to do both. You really should think about what you love to do first, and your strenths, no one can tell you want to do with you life- its your life. Do you want to have a job that you hate, but earn a great deal of money? or A job you love, but less money? Either way you need to have sacrifice, but you may be lucky enough to find both, but it doesn't mean you'll know right now. Really no one knows when they go right into college.

Oh and your situation about nursing, all my cousins who don't know what they wanna do in college are being pursuaded by their parents and families to do that (its a flip thing you know it). Don't choose something just because you are being pressured by your parents or family to please them and take the safe way out- you'll regret it. My couisn for her freshman year in college majored in pharmacy, becaue her mom graduated with a degree in pharmacy and wanted her to do the same- she hated it (she hated science in the first place) but she didn't say anything and just stuck with it. After that year, she called my dad and talked to him about business careers (he's a CEO and a vice president of a bank and graduated with a degree in accounting and masters in finance - i believe i can't remember right now) and she finally realized she liked math and wanted to go into business.

I know its tough with pre requisites and all, but you gotta think it though and there's still a lot of time, you can always stick to undecided. But seriously relax, its college, its supposed to be fun too . =] Hope I kind of helped and good luck.
kimmytree
I know how you feel... except I still have one more year before starting college.

But woah, it just dawned on me. For some reason I thought with prerequesties and everything it only took 2 years instead of 4. Ahh crap. mellow.gif

But out of the three, nursing seems like it would be more secure. Heck, the world's always going to need nurses. And its a job thats in high demand right now. AND I think it pays more than your other two options. thumbsup.gif

I'm wanting to be a nurse too. It seems like it's something that wouldnt be as boring... you know, compared to having to sit behind a desk all day, every day. Nursing seems less predictable.

Its been awhile since you first posted this... have you decided on anything, or narrowed down your choices yet?
dreamii
I'm in the same situation where I'm just COMPLETELY LOST. Even though I'm currently a Junior and have less than a year to decide... I'd say go with what you have an interest in. If you don't like nursing AT ALL, then I don't think you should take it because you'll end up hating it probably.. Good luck!
