if i dont put something there it comes out with the scrolling words "friends marquee input here"

You are suppose to put a custom friends list there.
Images/links to your friends myspaces.

If you dont want to do that, you could always take out the marquee or put a quote or lyrics there.

so just their picture url and friend id?

^ You'd have to use an image tag and link.
Like this:

Make sure the image of your friend is small, so that it doesnt stretch your page or anything.
