Depends on what type. From this site,

Generally, a person can only get HSV-2 infection during sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. Transmission can occur from an infected partner who does not have a visible sore and may not know that he or she is infected.

HSV-1 can cause genital herpes, but it more commonly causes infections of the mouth and lips, so-called "fever blisters." HSV-1 infection of the genitals can be caused by oral-genital or genital-genital contact with a person who has HSV-1 infection. Genital HSV-1 outbreaks recur less regularly than genital HSV-2 outbreaks.

I seriously doubt you will get herpes from a family member unless you practice incest. mellow.gif

haha yahh. i was just making sure. cuz i don't want an std. i'm just overeacting. if you're infected with it how long does it take to show up? it read that it took about 10 days. but i'm not sure. cuz i always thought it lay dormant/hidden for like 10 yrs or something and then it would show up. or is that only AIDS?
strawberry_sundae

Genital herpes, or like... coldsores? Either way, avoid touching ANYWHERE in the area. If it's oral, avoid using the same lip stuff, toothbrush, toothpaste, don't eat or drink after them, whatever. Just avoid all contact in those areas.

the dormant/hidden ones are the ones i'm scared of the most. cuz like you can never know until when it shows up ten years from now. nasty bit of shock it would be... i'm terrified of stds. but like pretend your parents had coldsores.. the children would be bound to have it too...so when they're born...how long would it take for it to show up in the childrren?
lovescream
Uggh. That sounds so hella nasty. I'm not sure though. I tried googling and it wouldn't give me an answer. Beh, anyway, is it possible to check up on that ? o_O Like see a doctor and see if there's an inactive virus in you ? Lmao, I'm like, medically challenged.

Genital Herpes (HSV-2)
More than 45 million Americans are infected with the herpes simplex virus that causes genital herpes. There are two types of herpes virus: Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2). Generally, HSV-1 is associated with oral herpes, marked by the presence of cold sores around the mouth, while HSV-2 is thought to be the cause of genital herpes. However, HSV-1 has also been shown to cause genital herpes. The herpes virus lives in certain nerve cells in your body where it remains for life.
Type of Infection: Viral

Mode of Transmission: Through direct skin-to-skin contact with the infected area during vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Symptoms: Although first episode symptoms of genital herpes tend to be worse than subsequent herpes outbreaks, often a person's herpes symptoms are so mild they go unnoticed. If you have been exposed to the virus, genital herpes symptoms can take between two and ten days to appear. Symptoms of herpes can include an itching or burning sensation and pain around the infected area. Painful lesions in the vagina, on the penis, around the genital area or anus, and on the thighs or buttocks often occur as well. Female herpes symptoms may also include vaginal discharge. Women frequently develop vaginal herpes, with herpes bumps and sores occurring in the vagina.

Treatment: Currently, there is no herpes cure. However, you can receive herpes treatment to help relieve your discomfort during an outbreak as well as reduce the frequency of outbreaks. There are three different types of herpes medication available, one of which may help lower the risk of herpes transmission.
