thumbsup.gif What do you think? Do you think it's a good thing?

Really, people need to stop eating too much fries. it's worst than baked potatoes.
think!IMAGINARILY
It's not just fries. KFC and Dunkin' Donuts too.

And umm. Well, it's not banning fries. Just trans fat in restaurants.
I think it is a good thing. Cutting down on trans fat will be good for your heart.
mona lisa
Of course it's a good thing but I doubt its efffects will be anything impressive. Some people just need to practice self-control. shrug.gif
Trinie
i guess its a good thing. everyone can start eating healthy.

Having a great intake of trans fat increases your risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, ect.
If they actually succeed in banning trans fat in restaurants (especially fast food), everyone will be healthier.
Serendipity
I think it's a good idea. Fries are unhealthy and loaded with trans fat, and many Americans are at risk for diabetes, heart attacks, etc.
lKVNiiKINKYl
No more chick-filla fries? cry.gif

I don't agree on some level. It is people's choice to eat this stuff. Although it is in like half the stuff we eat, people have the ability to look at it and be like hey thats not healthy, I won't eat it!

OMG. I officially love you. throb.gif XD.gif

Eh, I guess that'd do us all good. I don't like seeing over-weight people running around in the streets with their fat jiggling. sad.gif

Banning partially hydrogenated oils?
wow, that's a huge deal.
Almost anything that's packaged has some sort of partially hydrogenated oils.
It would be a huge change, but a necessary one.
It really is horrible for you.
And I'm glad they are finally doing something about it.
Trust me, no one is going to miss it, you can easily subsitute with better oils.

lol, so it's not banning fries or donuts or anything.
But the oils in them...

Does this really need to be in Debate?
I think I'll move this to News.

If a mod wants to move it back to Debate then go aheadl

Oh, I understand all that but it shouldn't and doesn't mean that everyone will finally be healthier. This ban may even bring people to continue or increase their consumption of fast food since they might think the food isn't as harmful. Being healthy is so much more than cutting back on trans fat. I doubt it will have any dramatic effects is what I mean.

Yep. A lot of people don’t worry much about their health. Taking away food doesn’t teach people anything but it'll lead them to find better food, I hope.

About dunkin' donut, I don’t think it should be banned. I think, donuts should be available in the morning only. After that, it should be illegal.

Better, right? _smile.gif USA is full of unhealthy influences.

If you think that way, illegal drugs should be legal. I mean, people have the choice to take drugs or not. Think about it.

Really, I disagree with you. There are a lot of irresponsible people that are screwing the society. We don't need people like that. We need to take away things from them because it won't do much good at all. That's why there are fatasses sue Mcdonald, burger king, and other restaurants. They don't have strong self-control over things they eat. My god …

Eh, I rather eat baked potatoes topped w/ cheese, onions, and sauce than fries.

They wouldn't really be taking the food away. Just taking away the unhealthy trans fat. People would still be eating those foods, but at least it'll be healthier.

With Dunkin' Donuts, it's only specific donuts. And eating donuts in the morning isn't exactly healthy.. High sugar intake in the morning = Hyperness. laugh.gif

I think trans fat should at least be lowered in fatty foods. You don't necessarily have to ban it.
suddenly she
YES. yesyesyesyesyes
they should ban trans fat all over the world.

Do you think it's still safe to eat fries after all? People eat it ... almost every week.

dunkin's donuts isn’t healthy. That’s true. Hm, i have nothing against that. i agree with you. we are always eating/drinking sugar from milk, pasta, rice, soda, and etc. Donut is the worst, i believe. it's full of sugar. _unsure.gif

You know ... I don’t ever get hyper from food. Sugar doesn’t work me. w00t.gif muwahaha.

Maybe not fries from a fastfood restaurant, but maybe fries from a regular restaurant. I think they're more healthy. And not just every week. I know some people who eat it like everyday! ohmy.gif That's extremely unhealthy.
I believe that it's safe to eat fries. Just maybe every once in a while.

They're not banning anything except for trans fat. It isn't all too tasty either. They'll probably find a replacement for it.

I don't think people are really reading the article.

If you guys actually read the article, you'd know that they're not banning fries. They're cutting down on trans fat.

And I've found a new article on this.

QUOTE
If the Board of Health votes in favor of the ban in December, New York will become the first large city in America to prohibit restaurants from using artificial trans fats, commonly contained in vegetable oils, margarines and shortenings.

I really hope they do ban it. People are literally eating themselves to death.
I've heard that life expectancy is actually over 100, but so many people are stuffing their mouths with unhealthy foods..

I say die young and happy...make a pretty corpse.

I mean seriously, I love fries. Do i eat them 7 days a week? no. I rarely have them at all. bUt its my choice. I mean, my family put bacon grease in their vegetables. what the hell do I need to worry about fries for when there is BACON GREASE IN THE FOOD!!!

Yeah. I say its stupid. They should just use better oil to cook it in.

'Bad fats' ban in NYC restaurants

New York City's Board of Health has voted to ban artery-clogging trans-fats from the city's restaurants.

The city's health officials have for years warned that the fats can cause obesity and lead to heart disease.

Trans-fats go into partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is commonly used for frying and baking.

The unanimous vote makes the city the first in the US to ban the fats, although the original strict deadline to comply has been lengthened.

Restaurants will be banned from using most frying oils containing trans-fats from 1 July, and will have to eliminate the fats from all foods by 1 July 2008.

'Unrealistic deadline'

Trans-fats are made when food processors harden fat to make it more like butter.

It can then be used for frying or baking, or put into processed foods and ready-made mixes for cakes and drinks like hot chocolate.

The Food and Drug Administration estimates that on average, Americans eat 4.7lb (2.14kg) of trans-fats each year.

The move has met with opposition from 24,000 restaurant owners in the city, who said the original six-month deadline to replace cooking oils and fats was unrealistic.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has defended the move.

"Nobody wants to take away your French fries and hamburgers - I love those things too.

"But if you can make them with something that is less damaging to your health, we should do that."

For more than a year, there has been a voluntary programme for the city's restaurants and fast food outlets to remove trans-fats from the food they serve.

Many American food makers and restaurant chains, including McDonald's and Taco Bell, have been experimenting with replacements for oils and foods that contain trans-fats.

Chicago is also considering a law that would restrict use of trans-fats in large restaurants.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6210600.stm

A unanimous vote.
Hopefully this will happen in the other states too. This might just be the start of a healthy America.

D:
You're kidding me, right? So you'd rather gain weight than have a lower risk for cardiovascular diseases? ohmy.gif

They banned trans fat was because many Americans now have high blood pressure and/or cholesterol.. This is good because now, not as many people have to suffer from heart disease, strokes, heart attacks, etc.
