I just watched G4techtv ATTACK OF THE SHOW in Japan. And they had a small segment of phones in japan, thought i would share with those that werent able to see it.

Vodafone 905SH

The Vodafone 905SH is one of the coolest phones that I saw in Japan. It looks like a standard flip phone with a huge 2.9-inch screen that’s based on Sharp’s Aquos technology. What’s really cool is that the screen pivots from portrait to landscape mode, which is great for enjoying the phone’s most awesome feature: the ability to watch live TV!

This baby is a multimedia workhorse. In landscape mode, the 2.9-inch screen lets you watch TV and video in 16:9, it also has Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera, and a MiniSD slot.

Biometric security is huge in Japan, and the Vodafone 905SH has face recognition software. You take a photo of yourself to unlock it! How cool is that?

*2.9-inch Aquos Screen by Sharp
*16:9 aspect ratio
*Has a face recognition screen for biometric security
*You can watch live TV with it
*2-megapixcel camera

ITS SO AWESOME. i want it.

they mentioned the latest in japanese phones were:
* Live TV
* The barcode checker, on every ad or magazine or product advertising there is a small box which squiggly lines in it that acts as a barcode, you take a picture with your phone and you are sent information about that product.

They showed the tv actually playing and it looked great, it wasnt staticy at all i was suprized.

I am so jealous. I tried to look up the other phones they had on G4 but i couldnt find any pictures on them.

WHY does japan have all this advanced crap and we get excited by have 100 songs on our damn phones. and our freakin 1.3 megapixels. They got face recognition, our phones wouldnt know our face from a dogs A** lol.

Yea they work like EZ pass on our highways, the phone waves a beam so you move faster. They say lines go very fast there cause people use it for their commute on the train, they dont have to shove anything into a machine but just wave.
think!IMAGINARILY
It looks like a calculator. mellow.gif

I wouldn't want it. It looks awkward and bulky.

That is some pretty awesome technology though.

Samsung is coming up with phones with like 8 MP though. I want those.

that would help a lot here. but then again even if there is traffic on the high ways the EZpass is still jam packed.

Yeah, I like the concept but I don't like the look of the phone. Maybe if they worked on the design and size. I do agree with you on Japan though. I love Japan's technology. One day I'll learn Japanese so I can just import stuff or go over there and get it. laugh.gif

It does look like a calculator. =P I think they should change the overall design of the phone, but it's still pretty cool.

Almost everyone in Japan has a TV phone, to be honest for me it's kinda useless since I'm forever traveling underground.

and Japan's technology isn't much greater than ours to be honest. They're just more creative and have less company standards. I would know because my uncle worked in almost every cellphone company.

I don't really see the usefulness. I use a cellphone to make phone calls, not listen to music or watch videos or live TV. Sure, it looks cool at first, but is it really that useful?
KissMe2408
I think the face recognation is pretty sweet. lol.
But the thing is I wouldn't NEED a tv on my phone lol.
I mean, I understand Picture phones, they do come in handy.
And the "bar code" thing on those phones, are pretty cool.
lol but it seems pretty cool.
probably wouldn't buy one if they came out with them here.
but would play with someone elses for a bit =)

So having an MP3 player, web browser, TV, camera, Instant Messenger, E-Mail, etc. all in your pocket isn't useful? That's odd.

Not really. First of all, phones aren't very good for web browsing, instant messaging, emailing, and so forth—that's what computers are for. A phone is good for making phone calls. Why would I want to go to the pain of IMing someone from a phone (not a pretty task, even on the best of phones) when I could just call or text message him? Moreover, it's not really a lot of fun to read email or web pages on a phone.

Furthermore, an MP3 player? I'd rather have a dedicated device—why would I want to drain the battery of my phone listening to songs? And the TV thing is obvious—again, a small screen, and when am I going to have a burning need to watch TV and only have access to my phone?

Camera? Okay, reasonably useful, but I could still definitely go without even that.

I know where your coming from, your the person that just wants a really good phone, but then again i find it really useful to have internet on our phones, today i had class and it was cancelled and i found out through checking my email on my phone, my phone isnt the best phone for viewing emails but i was able to get my assignment off of it. Other things like camera are useful cause i used to bring my camera everywhere until i got a bigger and better one. And for music player its just an add on for me cause i already have an mp3.

What im trying to say is that i would usually bring all this stuff with me but its good that its all packed in to one device, i think its good they do this cause its very useful and convenient. There are even some people who use their camera phones seriously and actually print out their pictures, cause they dont have an actual digital camera or they just cant afford one. And as for phones being able to browse the internet and emailing, iming, they are getting much better. They are getting faster and easier to use as new phones come out, i have a decent phone right now that was only 50 bucks, its my cheap "right now" phone so i can wait for a new better one to come out that suits my needs.

I just want a blackberry for work related e-mails, and yes for me IMs for very useful since all my friends are forever on AIM.

If someone's not really crazy about functions getting a simple Nokia phone would be best.

My phone does pretty well with all you listed. It gets what I need done and the newer phones are even better. Especially the ones in Japan.

I agree. That is was computers are for. However, try sticking your computer in your pocket. You have to admit that it is useful. And who said anything about "fun?" I was speaking functionality, but ok. I think they're pretty fun. I love having my pocket sized E-Mail, IM, and MySpace! Not everyone has a cell phone but most everyone has some form of IM. Nor do I have everyone who is on my buddy lists number. I think it's safe to say most of us don't. A pain? It's not a pain for me. I can type on a keypad almost as quickly as on a keyboard. (I type moderately fast.) You just have to get used to it. It's the same as someone being introduced to a keyboard for the first time.

Ask any Wall Street stock broker if it's useful or not and I'm certain you'd hear how they couldn't live without it. I guess if you're not that busy, social, or active you wouldn't need all that. Certainly doesn't hurt though and it's a little rash to say they aren't useful. happy.gif

I just don't see a need to be "connected" all the time. I can step away from AIM or email; it's especially easy if someone can call me (which I prefer anyway). And I certainly don't feel the need to be able to watch TV shows on a whim, but I don't watch a lot of TV, period.

I can sort of see the usefulness of reading email; there have been a few times that I've been away from a computer with an Internet connection, and wanted to check my mail. But then again, I've always been able to wait until I've had a chance to get back to "civilization".

Honestly? I think there's something to be said about being able to disconnect from time to time—not feel the need to be connected to AIM, email, MySpace, TV, etc.

All this is pretty old. And Korea actually makes the best phones, because there aren't that many Phone companies in Japan. Sony Ericsson is basically the only one I think of Off the top of my head.

Anyways, there are cameras with 8 megapixels like sandy said. SPH-V8200 or something like that. This is all DMB. DMB is actually pretty popular, outside of the US. Britain, Korea, Japan all have this. But one reason why they it, is cause those countries are tiny compared to the U.S.

And Michael, refering to your last post. Yeah, there really isn;t a need for any of us to be connected all the time. Most of the time, these companies are just putting the technology and making it, just to show what modern technology can do. Plus, its all about making money too. "OMGLOLZORSITPLAYSVIDEOS!!!111one"

Plus, then there are the people who truly like it, and aprreciate watching tv on the go like this. But that market is actually pretty small.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean and I agree with you. Sometimes I like to just want to "get away" if you will.

Of course, you could always turn off your cell phone. Then you're disconnected and it's there if you need it. happy.gif
