Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia's far north coast.
It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung.
"It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon.
Irwin was best known for his documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter".
He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father's footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program.
He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed.
In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin's Australia Zoo.
The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert.

Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, police said. He was 44.
Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.
:(
Though I have to say, for a crock hunter thats gotta be a great way to go. Kinda like an actress downing a bottle of pills. Its a great way to go for your line of work. Thats pretty amazing though. I mean, that he wasn't killed by a crocodile first. Stilla little sad tho.

I feel bad for his family he has like an 8 year old and 3 year old. It's sad, esspecially that the youngest probablly won't remember him much, although i'm sure his memory will stay a live for a long time.
He was always kind of annoying; that's a hell of a way to go.

This is soo sad I found out last night >:( I never thought he could die because he was such a dare devil. Im really sad for him to go..especially like this. I was watching the news today and only 1500 people in U.S water get stung a year.... and out of the 1500 deaths are rare.

He's like Superman. Everyone thought that he'd be immune to deadly animals, you know?
It's too rare for a stingray to pierce a heart, but I guess it's his time. I've always loved his show. Whenever I come across it, I'd watch it.
Another forum I was on suggested sending a letter of condolences on behalf of the whole forum.

Yea I saw this on the news this morning at like 6 this morning.
Me and my dad and his girlfriend were rather shocked by it, for how much he has done and then dies from a stingray. I saw the video about him as well.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/04/a...rwin/index.htmlIts on there as well. The story and a short video I think it was on there.

I just heard the new i watched a video on comcast .net and he recently also made headlines by doing a show and there was a big crocodile that he was feeding while holding his 1 month baby in his arms. He had to explain himself to the public why he did that .
But this news is shocking. They said the sting was next to his heart or something.
RIP.

When I woke up this morning and heard my mom saying something about my step-dad about an e-mail she had gotten about Steve Irwin.
We have a few friends in Austraila and she couldn't sleep, so my mom was reading her email at 2 am (afternoon Aussie time). She got an email from someone who worked with Steve.
When she told me he had died, I started crying. I know it's really sad, but I did.
I have looked up to Steve since I was like, 7. He was always a hero of mine because of his love of animals.
In 2003 the same person came to our national Silky Terrier (Austrailan breed of dog) National Show. For our auction she had a book by him and Terri and my mom bid on it and won it for me. She came to our room later and asked me if I wanted, I could write a letter to him and she would personaly give it to him.
Two months later I got a package back from Austraila. From her, and enclosed was a letter saying "I gave the letter to Steve and Terri and they sent you a few things in return".
Steve had written me a letter (not just some assiant of theirs, but him) and he signed it. They sent me the book back both had signed it and a few things from the Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland. I have the book and the letter wrapped up someplace, I would have to find it. I have a magnet though on my fridge (lol.).
I think he was a really awesome person for a young kid to look up to. He showed not to have fear of the world, and to always go for your dreams.
It's really sad. I plan on sending a card to Terri and the family our friend said she would e-mail her address back to us.
He was not only an icon in Austraila but here as well.

It actually wasn't the poison. Stingray poison is fairly slow-acting in humans. However, the tail barb is like a knife. He died from a stab wound to the heart.
