How would I fill a custom shape with a gradient?

What program are you using?

I use photoshop cs and this is what i do.

Apply my custom shape.
Go layer>resterize>resterize shape
Then click the shapes layer in the layers box. Right click and click blending options.
Then go to stroke, switch fill type to gradiate and wa la.

I think thats what your talking about if not let me know.

Make the custom shape.
and go to Layer-Gradient Ovelay.

Could you tell exact steps please?

I couldn't find it the Gradient Overlay.

Nevermind I found it. It fills the whole canvas. Is there anyway to select the inside only or outside of the custom shape. I tried the wand but it didn't work. If there is no way to fill a certain area how would I delete what I don't want filled?

I don't do that to my brushes. I load them from another folder (for example: C:/My Documents/Brushes) so it doesn't lag photoshop.

Do I have to load them that way? Is there no way I can load them one at a time from a different folder?

LOL, you misunderstood me. I was asking how to load the gradients one by one. I already have gradients in a folder similar to what your talking about. I figured out how to load it, it's similar to loading the brushes.

Ok I mentioned earlier that I found the gradient overlay, but I failed to mention it doesn't work. I have to use the actual gradient TOOL to fill the shape but it fills past the shape. Is there anyway I can fill the shape alone?

Why isn't the gradient overlay working?
I right click the layer, then I select blending options, then click gradient overlay and select the gradient I want.

Where can I find more gradients?

Okay. I can help ya. I know an answer to each of your questions.

1. My Computer >> Your hard drive>> Program Files>>Adobe>> Photoshop >> Presets >> Gradients

3. Why isnt it working? Well, have you filled in the shape yet? Or, BEFORE you fill in the shape, select all your gradient overlay settings and junk, then hit okay, THEN fill in the shape.

I'm still new to photoshop 7.
I figured it out, I had it on "paths" instead of "shape layers". LOL It's funny cuz when I want something to work, it doesn't but when I'm just clicking and doing trial and error I figure it out.

One last problem that I can't seem to figure out at all! How do I select outside of the "shape layer" to make a different gradient?

I want to fill all of the transparent outside of it with another gradient.

Select outside the shape layer? Well, if yuo still have the path (the gray outline thing) and then right click >> Make Selection >> Select inverse you'll get the space all around the shape. I think thats what you're asking? I'm not sure.

Try this, make your path with the shape tool, then hit the pen tool, right click, make selection blah blah blah



Oh sorry. Reili = fishcake-y and i'm sure she'd tell you. Tell her I sentcha.

It didn't work with the gradient overlay but it worked with the gradient fill. Instead of covering the shape like before it goes under. I guess that'll work since that's what I wanted. I'm just puzzled why it won't work your way.
