the liquid ones are difficult to put on nicely without smashing it but i think it looks better...

Pencil. It's not as harsh looking and it's easier to put on. Plus, you can't use liquid eyeliner in the smoky eye look, because it doesn't smudge once it's dry.

But to answer your question, I use neither - I prefer loose powder eyeliner.
