do you consider marching band a sport?
Nicolatofu
definition for Sport
1) Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
A particular form of this activity.
2) An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

That being said....I guess, you could kind of consider it a sport since it is a physical activity...I just never thought of it that way...I though of it just as...well...band lol

LOL

umm..................... NO.

haha... cause it's instrument. You guys don't even run around during marching bands. you guys march. I call it "MUSICIAL BAND" not sport _dry.gif
tweeak
actually, we do run. in practice and sometimes in shows. its called jazz running. besides which, you dont run in cheerleading, swimming or gymnastics. would you still consider them sports?
avalon*
well on one hand the band participates in athletic events such as playing during the football game, and they do practice long hours and all..

but on the other hand they don't really engage in the physical activities that are synonymous with sports. [besides running, you said.]
inthemudhole
Yes.
If you can consider stupid cheerleading a sport, then you can definitely consider marching band as a sport.

In Latin, our teacher told us that "sport" basically means any activities that you participate in that aren't part of your daily routine.. or something like that.
sunissed14127
hmm...kinda. because like XKali_chik_4_lifeX said,you could kind of consider it a sport since it is a physical activity.

actually you do run in cheerleading and gymnastics...well i know i did..

i dont really consider marching band a sport because...well...i dont see whats physical about it...just marching and the "jazz running"...not really that physical...
KissMe2408
no, not really....i consider it an extra curricular activity
tweeak
and sports arent extra currics?

jazz running 50 times in a row because the freshmen cant do it right can get pretty physical
LeSLiE
You run in marching band.. Up and down the bleachers.. around the track.. Yep, I consider it a sport.
heyyfrankie
my school does... blink.gif
xbernaa
i think it is~~imma gonna join it next year!! happy.gif they actually run and stuff...my bro told me they had to do push ups if they did something wrong..or wernt supposed to do..
Teesa
no, in my opinion, i don't consider it a sport..but a lot of people do.
ArChAn9eL
well you are working out those wrist bones...so who's best at doing that? i dont remember any drummer as famous as tony hawk or kobe bryant...

thats because you dont live in marchingland
fallen_angel1137
I don't consider it a sport....to me, a sport is like tennis or softball or something where you're actually running and working out and stuff..in marching band you don't work out...so no it's not a sport.
SkaironFrenzy
well i guess so.... my friends are all in it and they all complain that they get tired and all sweaty all the time.... yea and the compete too.... o yea any competition is a sport right?
tweeak
just so everyone knows, i havent made up my own mind yet on whether or not its a sport. but yes, we get sweaty and compete
sadolakced acid
No. it's not a sport. it is physically demanding tho.

it's not a sport becuase there is not a unfied handbook. there aren't requirements that marching bands must have X number of people, have numbers on thier uniforms, and the marching band parking lot (that's where my school's marching band practices) must be made of say concrete and be X long and Y wide.
tweeak
(the parking lot or baseball field [where we have to practice] has to have lines corresponding to that of a football field, so it does, so that arguement isnt entirely valid)
xsweetxcandyx
yea in marching band its like the US Marines... we give up a lot of time as most most sports do.. the only difference is that we have to learn other concept.. i mean you say cheerleading is a sport.. way not marching... we work as hard.. we have like 12 hours practices and stuff. Plus we do marching like parade routes that are like miles longs while playing and marching almost nonstop in heavy uniforms.
sadolakced acid
well, i know there are lines...

but it's not required to be certainn distances and such..

marching band is a physical activity... but it isn't really a 'sport'
tweeak
im not necessarily for it being a sport, but they do have to be a certain size. maybe the extra endzones or whatever (im not familiar with football) arent necessary, but the lines have to be at the exact same distance aparts and sieza as that of a football field
Levy2k6
at my school u get PE credits for being in marching band and i say it is a sport..

ROTC can also be considered a sport if u are in drill teams and stuff.. cuz we do run and we do have rules and things at drill competions...

i have to say, i would consider cheerleading and swimming, gym and the like to be much more 'sporty' than marching.

imarch everyweek for CCF, and run, and crawl, and i have to sya, im nowhere near as beat at the end of that as my girlfriend when she gets done with gym.

and i have to say, you have to be a hell of a lot stronger to lift another person than u do a flute.
sorry tweeak
tweeak
uh, have you ever tried carrying around a sousaphone while marching? a base drum?
tallaznkate
YEA iTS A SPORT. iTS AN ACTiViTY AND iT REQUiRES SKiLL AND iT HAS RULES. SO YUP. AND WE DO PUSH UPS AND JUMPiN` JACKS. OUR DiRECTOR ONLY MADE US RUN ONCE N THAT WAS WHEN HE WAS PiiiiiSSSSSED
tweeak
whoa, tone it down on the sticky caps, please

we do jumping jacks for warmups, but only some brass players do pushups. woodwinds are more often female with little interest doing push ups when they could be off gossiping
gigiopolis
oh no, not ``````````````` this thing again!

Marching band is a sport to me. =] But our school doesn't get PE credits for marching band! Not fair!
tweeak
``````` and sitcky caps :shudder:
i dont get PE credit either. sucks. dont want to take PE. not online or with freshmen while im a senior. or worse still, summer school. uck. PE shouldnt be required. but im losing that debate.
racoons > you
have to aadmit, never marched with asousaphone, and am not entirely sure what one is. but marching band is not a sport. its not olympicly recognized
tweeak
you used to play tuba and you dont know what a sousaphone is?
anyway...its the marching version of a tuba. the big wraparound sort of one...uhh..
captured_serenity
band is not a real sport...if cheerleading isnt...
runforfun529
According to the definition of a sport, marching band is a sport.
Try marching in the Rose Bowl Parade for 6 miles, and then tell me band isn't physical.
tweeak
did you march the rose bowl parade? lassiter did, but i only watched up until lassiter, so i suppose i wouldnt have seen your band if wasnt before them, i wouldnthave seen you
runforfun529
We marched in it in 2003. So much fun.
tweeak
ah. we havent done any parades in several years. ive never done any real ones (the little town parades dont count)
tallaznkate
WHATS WRONG WiTH THiS? ```````````?? iTS MY "APOSTROPHE" AND WHAT ARE STiCKY CAPS??
tweeak
youre talking in neatly all caps. thus, sticky caps. also, ````` is not an apostraphe. ''''''''' is
One day many years from now you will look at your old posts and shake your head, and mutter, "Man, I was such a n00b back then."
WELL MAYBE i LiKE STiCKY CAPS AND ` iS MY APOSTROPHE. WHY DOES iT MATTER?
tweeak
because a)its distracting b)it makes you look stupid and c)it gets on my nerves. not to mention that d)```` cannot be your apostrophe as you are not special enough to have your own, and thus you must join the rest of the world in typing properly with the actual apostophe
xGlovex
sure...you get exercise.
tallaznkate
Yea, I can type properly just to let you know. But this isn't an essay I'm writing for school. And how does typing like that make me look stupid? tYpINg lIke tHis Is anNoYiN. And I'm not using ` to make me "special". I just like the way it looks.
tweeak
stupid?
yes, im aware that you can type normally. it is after all easier than what youre doing. just the fact that youre not typing normally is aggrivating.
it does make you look stupid, because typing like a moron has come to be associated with little middle schoolers who type in sticky caps because its the cool thing to do. i also fail to see how not typing an essay for school is an excuse to stop (at least reletively) being correct.
but the ``` key is even farther away than the actualy apostrophe
but alas, i must do my duty as a mod and stop this nonsence. now back to band
