Full Version: At night but not at day?

Can anyone tell me why you can say "at night" but "at day" isn't grammatically correct? "Night" and and a definition of "day" are absolute opposites describing units of time or periods of light or darkness so why can't they be used interchangeably? And then there's "tonight" and "today" which aren't opposites; "today" refering to the entire day and "tonight" refering to a specific time period (of darkness) within the "day." Language is stupid. Or maybe I am.

And that is my pointless post for the day. :)

Hmm..I have absolutely no clue. pinch.gif

This thread could quite possibly on par with other Justin's thread a while back on questioning why the period & comma go inside of the quotation marks while other punctuation goes outside of it. Randomness ftw.

At night. During the day. At day. Hmm, it sounds so strange to say "at day." I have no clue.

Ahhh, and then there's internet lingo to add to the conundrums of language!

Conundrum is a funny word, how did it originate... it's not like it stems from archaic language. Who thinks these words up? The English language is the most baffling of all!

I am not worthy.

Sometimes you would think any other language is easier then English, but then you take a course in a different dialect and realize how much simplistic english can be (Native born Americans point of view). English is a tricky language if anything harder then some languages out there. But sadly foreigners take more time to understand english then Americans themselves. Pity us as our power is overthrown by an asian country because they know better grammer then us.

I don't even know if I made sense in anything I said in that.

^ eh, kind of.

well....i don't know. i guess it's just one of those things that's weird about the english language.

Way to turn this from a random, slightly idiotic post to possibly a thoughtful discussion on the English language.

Totally not my intentions. Go bury your head in a book or something.

Just kidding. Hello.

Hm, I think it's because, yes, night is a time of day, but when you say day, it mostly means like, well, a day. I think the correct way of saying it would be daytime since that refers to a time in the day. Although that doesn't seem to be making much sense to me. pinch.gif

I don't know which kind of shitholes you lurk around, but I imagine that none are a good type. Humans, dogs, teletubbies... all shitholes are gross. You hurt my feelings, dude.

Back to the topic at hand, what do you guys like to do at day?
Mr. Slowjamz

Roxannnnnnnneeee! Okay.. to answer your question, I said it aloud to myself.. I didn't think it sounded odd, but did anyone tell you it was grammatically incorrect? Perhaps it just sounds weird because "at day" is rarely said at all. shrug.gif Je ne sais pas. sad.gif I say we blame it on Jose.
Ington
'During the night' works just as 'during the day' does. However, night can also be 'at'. :P
English is a fickle bitch, it just likes to twist random things around for the hell of it. And I love you Roxy. :D
