This isn't about measuring intelligence, it's about trying to discern between who is going to be able to take themselves and others seriously within the context of meaningful debate and who isn't. This is about screening people in order to weed out those who don't actually care. It's about getting rid of the jokers, the contentious antagonizers, and the ill intended. If you show only a minimal competence in debate, but at the same time demonstrate a respect, admiration, and interest in appropriate and meaningful argumentation, then you most certainly belong.

The point is to get rid of people who only come here to find "easy targets." People who come here with the intent of replying to a post merely because they "enjoy pissing people off." Those people are clowns. They reduce the quality of debate and just don't belong here.

Only reason why Nosex wants to exclude members from debates is because as people read all his debates, typically his "atheist views" one comes to wonder what sort of bullshit is he feeding us. He's had excuse after excuse for nearly every answer, in terms of atheism at least.

My intent is actually quite sincere here, and has always been. But, I don't feel like defending my method or behavior or character - that really isn't relevant to this discussion. So, here is a short reiteration of my idea:

1. Make a new membership group that has exclusive access to the debate threads.
a. this group would be exclusive posted rights
b. all other groups would still be able to read the debate threads
2. Applicants may or may not undergo screening or evaluation.
a. if screening of applicants was implemented, it would not be strict or political. It would merely be used to ensure that the applicant had a sincere desire to be involved in meaningful argumentation.
b. If no screening was required, applicants would be given the privilege of posting.
3. New debate guidelines and rules would be implemented.
a. clearer and more precise guidelines
b. clearer and more precise punishments.
c. possibly suggestive materials on the art and appropriate procedures of argumentation.
4. Posting would be a privilege not a right.
a. all members of the debate group would be subject to removal.
b. extended absence, refusal to follow guidelines and rules, etc. etc. would result in the privilege of posting be removed.

This isn't anything wildly revolutionary and I have seen it been done right and successfully on many different occasions. I feel that it is one of the best opportunities this community has for improving, and encouraging, the quality of these forums.

Then why not make a member's only debate forum and leave the one that already exists intact.

Lack of traffic and participation, mainly.

I do agree with you on the point that the debate forum is brought down by excessive spam, posts that bring up arguments without back up, and pretty much ridiculous back-and-forth arguments that sometimes have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

An interview, however, is not a good way to go about this. Who really wants to actually apply just to be able to post their opinions in a forum? I think there should be debate moderators who'll warn members that just spam in the threads and if there are certain people who really have nothing to contribute, have it so they can't post in debate.

Then I guess you're screwed
