I keep up-to-date with the Gaim project, and I regularly browse the source code to see how things work, but to date, I haven't actually made any contributions back to the project.
Looking at source code is a good way to learn how things are done, once you know
how to program in the first place. I already had an advanced understanding of C and Objective-C, but you learn a lot of real-world, application-specific stuff by looking at source code—as well as getting an idea of how a major piece of software is designed and constructed, from an architectural/engineering standpoint.
