As I was driving back to work from lunch today, I was thinking of MTV's show My Super Sweet 16 (God knows why it came to mind), and I was replaying in my mind the scenes in which the rich brats kids hand out invitations to their wasteful awesome parties. As this came to mind, I happened to drive by my friend's house, and noticed the large "318" beside his door, and I remembered six and a half years ago, when I was in eighth grade, that I sent an invitation to him, to that address, for my own birthday party (which was not quite as fancy as those on My Super Sweet 16, but I digress). It occured to me that I haven't been invited to a party in a while--or, rather, I haven't received a paper invitation to any parties lately.

I realized that I kind of miss those. It was always pretty exciting to get a birthday party (or any party) invitation in the mail. It kind of made me feel special. I was invited. It was a cool feeling.

I think those sorts of invitations ended about the time I went to college--or maybe when I was a junior or senior in high school, but I know they were over when I went to college for sure. I guess that's because it's a lot easier to invite people to parties now--you just run down to their room or call them, and invite them over. Besides, parties aren't necessarily planned in college--they're pretty spur-of-the-moment things.

It occurs to me that there's a number of things I miss from school that aren't present in college. Another thing is Friday afternoons. When I was in high school, there was nothing like that feeling I got when school finally ended on Friday afternoon, and I was free for the next couple days. The evening was mine to sieze and do anything with.

Things aren't like that in college. First of all, I almost always have work on Friday evenings, so I'm not even done when classes end on Friday. But aside from that, classes are broken up enough that there doesn't feel like there's a clearly cut time when the weekend begins--there's no bell to signal its coming. And for the whole week I'm free to do what I want, when I want, in the evening--there's nothing holding me back from going out on a Tuesday night, staying out until 4 AM, and skipping my morning classes--so the weekend isn't quite as much of a thrill.

College is a fun time--but there are still a few things I miss from my childhood.

Aw, thats sad. sad.gif
My little cousins and my little sibs friends send out invitations....
Not to me, but to my family.. hahaha
My little siblings send out invitations to people too.
But I do understand somewhat of where you are coming from.
Tis sad.

Well my Fridays are fine, since I only have one class, then I go pick up my paycheck, then it's all fun from there...

It's quite sad when we realize the things we took for granted when we were children. I haven't received an invitation in the mail since middle school (not counting any high school graduation invites). I have quite a long list of those things that I miss.

- Juice boxes and granola bars that my mom packed in my lunch (along with those cute little napkin notes)
- Disney screen-printed clothing (with the Princesses, of course)
- Going skating at the skating rink
- Bikes with pink, glittery streamers
- Shoes that light up
- Trick-or-treating

etc.

*sigh* I miss the good old days.

Not all those things go away! In college, we live on granola bars, and I have a friend that keeps a stock of juice boxes at hand. It's not quite the same thing as having your mum pack them in your lunch, but at least they don't disappear completely.

At my old job (at a hardware store) I used to pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch every Saturday, too. My boss made fun of me ("Are you still in kindergarten or something? Did your mum pack that?") but I didn't care because it was good.

We still go trick-or-treating in college, too. _smile.gif

I just finished my freshman year and I had no juiceboxes sad.gif It was all bottled juice!!!! SO MUCH SUGARRRR.

I did, however, live off of fruit snacks. My roomie and I bought like, 30 boxes because it was 10 for $10...yeah, second semester was full of fruit snacks. happy.gif

My friend and her boyfriend recently had their 1-year anniversary, and she made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and went on a picnic. I found it to be a wonderful idea.
islandgirl4eva
I still love those. And sometimes when I make them for me and my mom, I cut off the crusts biggrin.gif

Yeah, peanut butter and jelly is great. The stuff of life. Lebensmittel, as the Germans say.

I remember back in '92 when I was a wee kindergartener they had this colored popcorn in the supermarkets. Red, blue, green, purple, they had a lot of different colors. My mommy used to pack them for my kindergarten snack. Haha. That was fun.

And at the end of that school year we did the whole green eggs and ham bit. I have to say that it was very enjoyable.

Hmm, Im trying to think of things I miss...

Summer break. ahhahaha.
Jasmine bathing suits (it was my favorite when I was little)
Kiddy rides at the fair.
Sneaking in the hallway to watch The stand when I wasnt allowed to. hahahahaha
Never ending amount of legos & Barbies.
Barbie corvette that I could ride in.
Hm....
Parks, flying kites....Playgrounds.
Dad reading to me at night
Yup. I miss all that crap.
KissMe2408
Hm, I do agree. I miss those birthday invitation things, Once I got into highschool I stopped getting those, and got phone calls instead.

Not sure why "My sweet 16" got into your head while driving. lol. Though there was one episode where this girl died her poodles pink for her party and I was absoloutly disgusted with just that. I got my mom to watch the show once, she doesn't call me a brat as much as she used to now.

I miss spaghetti dinners. Spaghetti dinners with loads of tomatoe sauce and meatballs. And I miss the feeling of not caring how many carbs are in that dish, not caring how much sugar is in the sauce and is it organic?, and actually eating the red meat instead of eating around it.
I miss my friends when they were much younger, innocent, and seemed to have a better head on their shoulders. I miss not worrying about money and playing outside for the day was the highlight of my week.
Not to mention that big spelling test on Friday!

Ah, things have changed...
islandgirl4eva
OMG.

How could I forget running home when the streetlights came on? That's a rush if I ever had one.
emazing
I like getting invited to parties because of the neat little invitations that they hand out, and I did watch My Super Sweet 16 last Saturday. The girl who kept throwing temper tantrums and calling her mom a beezy was irritating the hell out of me, and the girl who thought/acted like she was the next top model was more than a tad bit bratty. rolleyes.gif
krnxswat
Okay. That's cool.

You know what I miss? Pokemon at 7 in the morning on Sundays. When I actually had a working alarm clock that actually woke me up. Ooooooooooooh... And honey balls. I think that's not something anyone here would understand. I'mma try to explain:
You know how you give Cheerios to a baby to occupy them? Well, Japanese-American babbies get given these little... Melt-in-your-mouth sweet cracker balls. We call them honey balls. It's like a Teddy Gram. You eat them until your five and about then is when the younger brother/sister comes. Okay, end of story.
... What else does Reili miss? Not much.

In junior high, my friends and I were loud and caused a lot of mischief. (Going into the lockerooms and playing extreme dodgeball, TPing the guys locker room, TPing our teachers classrooms, taking pictures of people sleeping, prank calling). They were stupid ideas, but I miss them anyway.

Bad, tsk, tsk.

When I was younger I used to kick dirt at this kid I didn't like and I never got in trouble with it. :/
Tribal J_Rome
I miss fieldtrips
and my Jurassic Park lunchbox
and Hide and Seek with the neighborhood kids at night.
and cartoons like Darking Duck, Ducktales, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles[the original], The Batman/Superman Adventures
my legos
being carefree and having no worries about anything in the world

-edit-

AND THAT STEAL THE BACON GAME!!

Ahh, those napkin notes. My mom used to do that. A few days ago, my mom asked me to pack her something for lunch so she can eat it during her lunch break, and I decided to return the favor and write her a little napkin note of my own. _smile.gif

I still get paper invites, but it's to like semi-formal or formal birthday parties, like quinceañeras, sweet sixteens, and debuts. (I'm possibly going to my friend's debut in July! happy.gif)

But yeah, there are a lot of things I miss. Like swings.. I don't know about you guys, but lately when they build new playgrounds and such, they don't put in swingsets anymore. cry.gif I miss swings..
