Ok, so my son will be in the first grade this September and I'm wondering - do you guys/gals still use book covers on your text books? laugh.gif

I know... cheesy cheesy... but I remember using old paper shopping bags as book covers when I was in school (you know, back when the earth was still cooling wink.gif ).

So help an out of touch mother out - what do you use, if you use anything to cover your text books?

PS - I did a search but didn't find anything. innocent.gif

Hehe, I used to use calendars and shopping bags too. Those sticky things stores sold seemed so expensive for such a silly practice ^^
mipadi
I didn't have to cover textbooks until middle school. I always used old paper bags. They were cheap and pretty simple to make.

Being in college, I don't have to cover textbooks anymore. _smile.gif
silver-rain
I don't cover my textbook, unless the teacher asks us to.
My school usually gives out paper to cover the book with, but I've seen people who used a paper bag as the cover, making it easy to carry as well.
think!IMAGINARILY
use contact paper or something like that.
it's like this clear plastic-y thingy that sticks to the cover of the books. but the bad thing is that you can't take it off the books.
Statues/Shadows
In middle school they started requiring them, so I used the stretchy cloth kind for a couple of years. I'm really glad I'm done with that now; they were irritating.

Yeah, those are really common, and they're so much easier to use than having to cut out the right size of paper or whatever.
sprezzatura
For some of my classes, I have to, or else I will get points off my grade!
o0olaalaa
i use those clear plastic ones that stick on it
im in 9th grade yea and i only do it cuz my teacher says she'll take 5pts off our grade if we dont
voguelove
i dont use those ugly paper ones. i use the stretchy fabric ones.
sadolakced acid
i'm not requireed anymore, but i still cover ugly books. call me vain.

i use brown packing paper, i got a roll of 50 feet by 3 for 3 bucks.

pretty nice, covered a lot of books with it.

and you can doodle all over them. quite fun.
Rachel
Yes, but I don't think a first grader will need book covers.

I never used them until last year, my grade was in danger unless I covered it.
Paulina
We're required to use book covers. I use the fabric kind. The paper one always get ruined too quickly.
Smoogrish
Yupp. _smile.gif I like to buy the stretchy fabric ones and then decorate them with puffy paint. I'm puffy paint obsessed.
BOOGERSHAHA
whaaaaaaaaaaat. textbooks in first grade? i use stretchy ones because they can be reused multiple times. calendars work just as well, and they're cheap.
nopattern
i really don't cover my books anymore unless it's a teacher that is strict about it. most of them don't care. i used to use stretchy ones but now i just use paper ones if i have to.
adurf
i dont use them unless they're required.. but if they are, the fabric or clear sticky ones are nice _smile.gif
Looow
i dont use book covers. i only have one on n thats not even my book. my bfs bio book. i write all over it.
stephinika
Yes I dooo. Only in high school though, I never did in elementary. And I used to use wrapping paper but now I have those fabric, stretchy ones. thumbsup.gif

My school gives out bookcovers for us to cover our textbooks.
XxStaplegunnedXx
yep,we do,we're actually required to at my school,or we get our grade lowered or detention until we get one on our books...but thats high school, not sure about elementary school, though my 5th grade brother has book covers on his books. But right when school stars wal-mart has strechy book covers for not too pricy and they last a while too.
magicfann

Jeff!! throb.gif .. why are you referring to me as my username? blink.gif

Anyways. I once used those really sticky crappy adhesive book covers that stuck to your book.. I never got it off, so I had to buy another textbook. _dry.gif Beware of adhesives!

I remember those. The teachers would get pissed if you used them. I used those brown paper bags for my books when I was in elementary school. My parents didn't know how to do it because they never saw it before so they asked another parent to do it for me. They tipped them a few bucks too tongue.gif

I don't think I got text books until like 3rd grade. In first grade, we had individual workbooks with pages that pulled out or we got handouts. We punched shapes out of the workbooks and all this other cool stuff I forgot about. My teacher would give us one M&M or one Skittle if we did our homework which was usually coloring something in and/or easy math problems. I miss first grade cry.gif

Thanks everyone for your comments. I haven't heard whether or not covering books was required, but he's my first child and I am so new to all this school business with him so I thought I'd check. laugh.gif
Paradox of Life
It's required at my school. I would go ahead and get them just to be safe. You can get them at the dollar store, I believe.
Ambuletz
Heh, I never really understood the purpose of book covers. I mean, if you spill something on it, it's going to soak right through anyway.
emazing
We used to use text book covers in elementary I believe, but we stopped in middle school because it was just too much of a hassle.
My Cinderella.
I use them. I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'd rather have a spongebob book cover than a messed up, broken down, old textbook by the end of the year.
x__rilind
some teachers require them, but most don't.

and the courses where you have to have a cover, it provides a good place to scribble and doodle when you're bored.
maryissa
I only used book covers for 6th grade. They made us bring the book back so they can see it was covered and we got a grade for that. I used the stretchy cloth one. But now we dont need to cuz i go to a different school other then the school i went to for 6th grade.
oXMuhNirvanaXo
At my school we have to use them.
ecargnmyst
yeah it used to be a really strict requirement in j.h.s i dont remembr about elementary school.. but i dont think anyone cares in H.s. b/c teachers trust u enough to handle the books w/ care..however some ppl still do it out of habit

my mom always used plastic wrap to wrap the books when i was little.. but now my school gives out book covers..not many ppl use it tho
Rachel
Again Rebecca, I don't really think your first grade son will need bookcovers!
adecimalabove
we're supposed to but no one uses them! :)

hmm... i don't use them... because i don't really care for them...

but there are some that you can buy to put over 'em... they're usually pretty girly, so if it's your SON... idk... they probably make some camoflauge types... but yeah, i would just try lookin' in target or walmart or somethin' like that if you want book covers.
