IMHO there's also a growing and definite split within the conservative camp between traditional conservatives (like me, now mostly grouped with libertarians) and what we commonly call "neo-conservatives" like most of the Republcian Party.

The liberal-conservative split is too simplistic to describe politics, really. It makes it seem like there's only two sides to any given issue. There are in fact, many groups of ideologies. Liberals are split mainly into liberals and socialists, while what we consider conservatives are either traditional conservatives or neo-conservatives. Meanwhile, there's libertarianism and alot of other derivative ideas that don't belong in either liberal nor conservative.

Liberal Conservative... or Conservative Liberal?
I'm not too fond of political classifications because they seem like another way to divide the country. I agreed with Kerry during the elections and I also agreed with Bush, but they both were full of it to an extent.
So am I a Liberal Cons---, whatever, you get the point.

Moderate conservative.
I flex on issues such as gay marriage, and cloning. I'm a little more die-hard concerning abortion and capital punishment.
I also pray that taxes never reach Clintonian levels and that laissez-faire economic strategy is always used in our system.
And I'll fight for those views until my last day.
EDIT:
I guess the 'moderate' should be dumbed down a bit. I'm actually pretty hardcore conservative most of the time. But it's more like this...
Social issues: moderate conservative, quite flexible.
Economic issues: the conservative ideology is always better, and I get hardcore about it.

I had a discussion with my grandfather about liberals and conservatives and he put in real simple terms..
Those of us that claim to be such liberals now, are going to be conservatives in the future, even if we don't admit to it. And those of us that are such stiff lipped conservatives are going to be even more stiff lipped for the next generation.

because you have basically the same beliefs, but the world gets more liberal.
making the now moderates conservative, and the now liberals moderate.
unless the world started getting conservative...
then you'd get more liberal.
