My favorite genre of music, Ska, is one that is highly unknown these days. Many poeple, if they do know about ska, believe that Less Than Jake or Reel Big Fish started it, when in fact it has been around since the 60's! Reggae and Punk were both influenced by ska, and some of Mr. Marley's greatest hits were in fact ska.

Ska is often defined by the upbeat guitar strokes and of course, the horns. Bass is also a highly defining factor in ska music.

"I don't know any ska bands!" Well, culled from my own myspace, here's an awesome list of bands from all three waves of ska.

Catch 22, Streetlight Manifesto, Big D & The Kids Table, Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Goldfinger, Mustard Plug, Hepcat, Go Jimmy Go, RX Bandits, Reel Big Fish, Operation Ivy, The Specials, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, MU330, Less Than Jake, The Skatalites, Skankin Pickle, The Aquabats, The Toasters, Sublime, Suicide Machine, The Planet Smashers, Five Iron Frenzy, Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster, The Selecters

"I feel like inserting a shameless plug into this topic!" *points to sig* My own ska band. Music up soon.

"Why are you so awesome?" It was a gift from the gods.

"Please stop talking now" Ok.

Love ska.
Lovelovelove it.

Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, The Toasters, The Aquabats, Suicide Machine, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Operation Ivy, and a few local/semi-regional bands are my favorites.

I might see both Reel Big Fish and The Aquabats in August.
I really can't wait.

Ska, it's alright at times, but for the most part, it's too uppity and happy for me. pinch.gif

Oooh--I'm a big fan of ska. The music is just so relaxing compared to a lot of stuff in many other modern rock genres.

I like ska. I read about it in a homework assignment and I looked it up some more. Ahhh-now everyone's trying to get me to dance to ska. Sometimes it gets too...happy for me, though. It can get annoying.

i got sick of ska 2 years ago

I didn't see any topics for ska music, third wave to be exact. Any ska fans out there? I just got this Mustard Plug cd the other day and I'm hooked.
d0nchikit0
I don't think I know any ska bands. maybe if some were named I would be able to name some I know.
pinksharpiex
Some ska bands are Reel Big Fish, Flatliners, Big D and the Kids Table, Mustard Plug, and Aquabats.
d0nchikit0
Big D and The kids table I like. I probably know more but I can't think of any. Does Less than jake count?
pinksharpiex
Yeah, Less Than Jake is ska, well, atleast they use to be. They've kinda lost their sound over time.
NoSex
Third wave can be pretty awful sometimes. I'm not really much for punk with trumpets. It isn't awful, but I prefer that 1st wave sound in most cases.

Hepcat, Desmond Dekker, The Specials, Rx Bandits, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.
pinksharpiex
Not all third wave ska bands use brass instruments, although I do agree they can be very annoying. I'm not much a fan of traditional ska. Complete reggae isn't really my choice of music.
Tribal J_Rome
i'm not into that much ska but RX Bandits are pretty good. and i like a couple of older Less Than Jake songs and i'm starting to get into the aquabats

^Two reasons why living in NJ rocks. I'm listening to Catch 22 right now. I want to go see them live with Mustard Plug, Big D & the Kids Table, and the Flatliners.<< The perfect ska line-up.
jennyjenny
I believe there have been topics on this.

Big D played on Halloween over here. It's funny to catch people "skanking"

Meh Ska is nothing special to me.
EddieV

nopattern
eh, i thought i replied to this...

ska isn't that bad. i reallllly like sublime and streetlight manifesto.
Statues/Shadows
I like Save Ferris and Reel Big Fish, but that's about the extent of what I still listen to, except maybe old No Doubt

I don't really like first wave ska much at all.
acidophilus
People still replying to this?

*shrug*

Note: The Arrogant Sons of Bitches and Bomb the Music Industry (http://snevesneve.com/btmi to download full albums, since they give theirs away) have been declared the greatest ska bands ever.
