i am trying to get part of an image transparent with the background erase tool. but how do i?

How do you do what? You erase..and then save it as a .gif

do i gotta save it as a gif then open the gif, then use that???

Open up image. Erase the parts you want to erase.
File -> Save for Web -> Select the .gif filetype and save.
