Full Version: avoiding both HD-DVD and BluRay?

I plan on avoiding both HD-DVD and BluRay, at least until there is a definitive winner and prices are much more reasonable.

My parents seem to always get burned by this. When I was younger, we found their wedding tape, but it was in BETAMAX. We know VHS won.

Later, we bought a LaserDisc player when it was still cutting edge. We know how that turned out.

If I recall correctly, we didn't buy a DVD player until like 2002. At the moment, we have a modest DVD collection. And now we're on the verge of a next gen format.

I just don't see the need to upgrade. When I was growing up, VHS quality was just fine. Later on, VCD quality was great as well. DVD was even better. But I just don't see the use in spending thousands on an HDTV (though I think we're planning on buying one anyway since our 36 inch TV just conked out) as well as however much a new player and library will cost.

What do you guys think?

I think alot of people think that HD is this big monster getting ready to take over the world.

The reality is that its not that prevelant right now, and it wont be a standard for a long time.

As for HD-DVD or BluRay? I wouldnt plan on buying one unless the price dropped below 100$ which will be quite a long time. Considering everything is made in DVD form right now, theres no need for anything else.

i plan on getting DVD.

well, as in DVD-rs and DVD burners. i expect the price will drop due to HD-DVD and blu-ray.

i don't really care about HD right now. so, yea.

I got an external DVD burner for 100$, and it works great. And DVD-Rs are really cheap nowadays.

i like toshiba better. i hope hd-dvd wins.

but anyways, it doen'st really matter for me. by the time i'm ready to upgrade, there will be a winner, and the next fight will be over holographic storage or whatever.

GOSH why doesnt someone just pick the better one and change every like 10 years cause i was totally fine with the DVD it took me long enough to buy one. then buying another kind is just madness. They really shouldnt have to have different formats for media. everybody should just stick to one and if time permits then change it to a new format.. I REALLY HATE UMDs. like really cause i go to best buy and the pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger, there are so many unbought UMD movies maybe once or twice a week but who seriously buy them. That is such a waste of money..... but in my opinion HD DVD should win.

I'm fine with my DVD player, and regular DVDs, and my projector television.
