Yup I know that, there's always a chance, but if they pass it out at school, it reduces the chance of obtaining an STD...slightly *cough*

Hmmm... I think the parents should decide whether to distribute condoms to their kids or not. *shrugs*

haha i noticed u put the word slightly there wink.gif
ryfitaDF
why not?
shawty_redd
i think that they should be distributed because kids are having sex and they need some way to protect themselves. its bad enough that there are so many diseases out there and to have no protection then that would make it worse..plus it helps to decrease the amount of teen pregnancys...

exactly. kids ARE having sex. true some arent. but this isn't a matter of abstinence- this is a matter of helping those who ARE having sex be protected from STDs. that's just selfish- just because YOU aren't having sex doesn't mean no one else is. think about the people who are. they aren't bad people. i have sex with my boyfriend, i'm in high school, i'm not a bad person, and i don't make bad choices. if you think it's a bad choice, that's your business, but that isn't for schools to decide. they don't teach children their morals in high school. they educate the students. and it would be helpful if they offered free condoms to minimize the STD statistics amoung high schoolers.
l_baybeexgrl_l
i think.. if that district have alot of "bad" students .. like.. druggies.. alcoholics.. or sexually active people.. and they know about it... They should..?

otherwise.. not really bc theres other things better than having sex
Mini
yes!! free condoms are the best..but i dont think not alot people have sex in school.
JlIaTMK
NOOOOO

if they do then who knows wat could happen in school and it just makes sex more and more appealing to kids
Mr. Psychotic
they are saying if ur going to do it..might as well be safe!

That's like saying, "We should abolish the rules of war, and from now on just nuke every country whenever we fight, because if fewer people die in war, that just makes war more appealing."

thats not what im saying at all

im saying that because kids see sex as something appealing....

first of all i dont think most parents like the idea of condoms being given out to their kids

secondly they already talk about abstinence in school so y would they give u condoms when sex is the complete opposite of abstinence

this is basically what they would be saying....

practice abstinence but if all else fails use condoms to protect urself

that really doesnt make any sense
ComradeRed
Well if they want to say "practice abstinence, but use condoms if you must" then they should give them out, shouldn't they?
sadolakced acid
i got taught abstinece. but heck, i didn't listen.

all i heard was that STDs kill you. blah blah blah.

QUOTE(NaTiMaRiE @ May 13 2004, 9:24 PM)
Ok, I hope this is PG-13 but this isn't really nasty or supposed to be, but the question in the matter is:

Should condoms be distributed at school? Why or why not?

(i.e.: to prevent pregnancies, STDs, etc.)

What do you think?

If they distribute condoms at school, that's sending both a positive message, and a negative message.

If they distribute condoms at school, that's SOMEWHAT saying that it's okay to have sex whilst young as long as you have a condom. I know, I know.. they're not seriously trying to send that message if they distribute them, but some people might get that idea and start to experiment around.

The positive message is that condoms keep yah safe. That is very true.
It's probably a hell of a lot easier for everyone to get a condom from the school, than going out and buying one at a drug store..

It's a good thing to teach kids.. the fact that condoms keep yah safe, and that you should use them when having sex.

Personally, I think abstinence is the best condom.. happy.gif .. if that made sense..
LJrules
wow...very interesting topic. happy.gif
ComradeRed
I'm undecided. On the one hand, it would be a good idea to lower STDs. On the other hand, I find it wrong to waste people's tax dollars because some kids are irresponsible. I think that each school should be free to make their own decision.
rnrn897
i think that would be supporting sex..
a kid would take it and say
'oh.. they give this to me to USE'
so, no.. it shjouldnt..
ComradeRed
No it's saying sex exist.

It's like war. Saying that there should be rules of war is not saying that war's okay, it's acknowledging that war will always exist no matter what.
sweetxsimplicity
uhmm..no, 'cuz if the condom breaks and the girl gets pregnant, her mom might like sue the school or something like that... pinch.gif

EXACTLY. They're accepting the fact that teenagers will still go ahead and have sex anyways, regardless of the fact that it's illegal and regardless of their parents restrictions.. so they might as well make sure the teens have protected sex
SasukeNaru
They already have classes encouraging the "best sex" (as my Sex ed teacher was told to say) so condoms would further encourage sex in schools. Its ok to have sex but not mid- high school age or in that location... I mean ive heard of weird places to have sex but school isnt 1 of dem
EmeraldKnight
QUOTE

Actually its not..

1. The parents may forbid it
2. Its illegal for minors to have sex, even with each other
ComradeRed
It's not illegal for minors to have sex with each other. It's only illegal for a minor to have sex with an adult... At least that's the way it is in PA.

Either way, statutory rape is a victimless crime that enforcing laws against is definitionally harmful. It should be legalized.

ComradeRed

Why should it be legalized?

1) Where is "here"?

2) It should be legalized because it is a victimless crime. The only way to enforce laws against a victimless crime is to violate the privacy of innocent people -- which does more damage in the long-run than the victimless crime itself. No one is harmed, so no one reports the crime. Therefore, the police cannot catch anyone, or even know that crimes occur, unless they spy on people, violating their legal due process rights under the Fourth Amendment. Now pedophilia is different. If a kid is seriously too young that it is considered exploitation, then the parents of the kid should be able to report the crime. But if it's a 16 year old, then no crime will be reported. The only way to enforce laws, therefore, is to snoop into people's private business. Sex is not the government's business.

1. Here is California where its supposedly illegal (at least my Health Ed. teacher said that)
2. Well if the minor comes forward and reports it or something? Snooping isnt required to enforce it.. I mean.. ok, the police shouldnt be out looking for cases like that, but if one is reported.. why should it be legalized?

1) Your health ed teacher is probably lying... California being a liberal state and all.

2) If the minor comes forward and reports it, the chance of that is almost zero. And when a teenager does report that, most of the time it would be just to get back at the person older than 18, even though the teenager is just as responsible. There is too much room for abuse in this situation. People are sexually mature after puberty. After puberty, they are biologically meant to have sex. That's how it is. Creating a legal fiction above that is only going to cause more harm.

How is it causing harm? I dont see that..

Well, guys at my school already hand out condoms to their friends. blink.gif I mean I guess it has its ups and downs. You wouldn't have to go to the store. But, yeah, it's like encouraging them to have sex. But at least, it'd be SAFE sex. huh.gif

Its not encouraging them.. its acknowledging the fact that they will have sex.. and besides, its not like the school hands it out to everyone, just the people who ask (at least that's how it works here..)
jasonjasonjason
nah, i dont think its a good idea. it would just encourage more sex. if ppl really want to have sex, then they should take the resposibility and go get their own condoms at a drug store or wherever.

But that's just it.. teenagers dont like to do that.. its better to be safe and have them available at school..

Seriously.. teenagers and responsible... isnt exactly the most common combination, sadly enough..

It would cause harm because people would simply exploit the law to "get back" at boyfriends/girlfriends, even when they were just as responsible for hte sex.

Heck yeah...why not I say? People are going to do so at least promote safe sex! Those things can get costly..haha!!

yea i agree wit ^^^^^

its not like ppl rnt having sex, so y not make sure they r using protection when they are having sexual relations with others.

and u dont really have 2 pass it out, but make it avaliable for the students 2 get without embarassment, so that those that are participating in intercourse, can get the condoms.

Yup, my point exactly; people are saying that the teens should buy them themselves at the pharmacy.. but they dont like to do that because they may feel embarassed; and the school making it available without embarassment helps
vynni3
yes distrubution of it is needed cz teens are often time lazy and of course embarassed to buy em the hassles!!
so it should be !
forgottenrazor
yea they distribute them in my school you just have to go to the nurses office.

nope. Condoms don't protect against stds.. to me, it would feel like our schools were inforcing/encouraging us to have sex..

Not really...schools just want protection. Whoever wants to get them it's their business. It's a lot about morals too. I mean, like me personally, I wouldn't get a condom, even if they were free. Schools aren't handing them out, just saying that they have them for whoever wants them. =\
For crazy teens...bleah

Actually where did you hear that? I believe they DO protect against STD's. Maybe you're thinking of birth control pills. Well if im wrong (which i doubt) condoms still prevent against teen pregnancy. Schools would be encouraging us to have sex if they handed out condoms to everyone. My school has them available if you ask.
visualfusion
Even though distributing condoms will be somewhat of an "encouragement" from schools to have sex, it's better than not having them at all. Kids are stupid, I know, I am one, and either way they'll do it, so why not have it the safe (99% lab results my ass, more like 70%) way?
HiddenFaerie
I suppose it's a good idea. Although it would be encouraging to curious teenagers, but at least it's better than teenagers getting curious without them. biggrin.gif

But of coarse theres always the fact that most of your teachers will know your having sex. Which I guess is sort of awkward.
EmeraldKnight
QUOTE

No they wont; my school has them avaliable anonymously at the nurses office.. no one has to know, kids'll use it and be safer..
redsoxbaby87
no. parents would never agree.
EmeraldKnight
QUOTE
no. parents would never agree.

Actually they will and they do.. our school does it, parents know about it, so obviously they agree that its for the better..

They dont want their kids to be sexually active, but they acknowledge that they cant supervise them 24/7 so its better for the schools to offer confidential protection
aud_chua
no.. i disagree with that.. i don't like the fact that some people make a joke out of it and open the wrappers and toss the condom around the school.. it's just annoying.. plus.. is the school promoting sex...? i don't like the idea of pre-marital sex.. and if the couple is smart, they wouldn't even need the condom cuz they wouldn't have sex...
