Should condoms be distributed at school? Why or why not?

(i.e.: to prevent pregnancies, STDs, etc.)

I think that would be cool, ya know? But then again it might send the wrong impression like... maybe it'll seem like they're encouraging us to have sex. But i actually would be for it... I think they should. It sure beats having to go to the liquor store to buy some, lol

Uhm, our school passes out condoms but not publicly. you have to goto the nurse and they'll give you some no questions asked.

i also agree with elba, that they might be encouraging sex when they do. we had a debate on this topic in sociology.

It would be a good idea for the nurse only to hand them out....i mean look how many kids has kids in school...there are a lot at my that pregnant or have kid(s) already....and even if they are not given out at school...for those that are on medicare they are free...

I totally agree. Considering that if you're caught younger than 18 having sexual intercourse, you will be taken to court and no matter WHO the guy is, he will most likely be charged for rapage, even if the girl acknowledged the fact that SHE was engaged in the sexual intercourse. So it would be a little embarrassing to go get some condoms lol. And plus, even if they DO pass them out at school, nick is right, it will encourage sex. Students are going to think it's right at their age, when it's not.

I think otherwise. Kids are not fully aware of the reason for sex except for enjoyment even in highschool. True, some may truly be in love and what not, but sex can sometimes twist a person's mind and cause them to sleep around more for the pleasure than being fully engaged in it for the right reasons. This leads to the whole hoe/jiggalo deal.

Alright, do you live in Canada? There is no such "legal" age to have sex. You can't have sex with a minor if you are over 18 (which kind of sucks, because unless your boyfriend is EXACTLY the same age as you, you'd be committing a crime by having sex with them before your 18th birthday if he's already 18). No. Hello? Some kids are idiots, and don't love the person they are having sex with. But others, do love their partners. It's a way of expressing themselves. They will have sex if and when they want as well. Whether or not they have sex is not your business, it's not mine either. But schools should distribute condoms for those who are making their own personal decisions about their bodies, so there aren't any mistakes.

Condoms being passed out at schools does promote sex in a way, but it's better to promote a little safe sex then to have some kids risk unprotected sex.

My middle school and highs school's approach to sex education and teaching about STDs was to basically make us do projects on STDs and instill nothing but fear into us.

[ However, you could always tell which kids were in health because you would hear conversations in the hallway like 'what do you have?' 'I got herpes.' 'Cool. I got chlamydia.' ]

I think it would have better if they also discussed ways to prevent the STDs more than just scaring us with nasty pictures. I think passing out condoms would have helped.

i think its a good idea.
my high school does it and a lot of girls ask for them and because they didnt have to face the humilition of buying one, they use it when they're having sex. it helps a lot and a lot of girls are grateful for it.
the school isnt TELLING YOU to have sex. they're telling you "we know youre doing it anyway, just please, be safe." and thats a good message to send. that they're not commanding you, but asking.

Well, it WILL become our buisness if the person you happen to marry, cherish, and show intimate love with happens to be someone that slept around in highschool and contracted aids or some other disease, and it will also become ur children's buisness when their father has to tellt hem that the reason why they're going to die before they turn 20 is beacuse he gave aids to them. I mean, passing out condoms in highschoool may help to save a few people from getting AIDS, but its not going to do them well if they dont chose to wear it all the time and end up sleeping around like hoes. I'm not saying its a bad idea, my saying is that its encouraging them to sleep around thus it shouldnt be done. Well, maybe it's cause our parents arent really open with the term "sex." they're very... erm... secretive about it. I mean, when i walked in on my parents having some quality time when i was a preshcooler, okay.... i mean, my dad was like yelling at me and my mom was all blushing but mad at the same time. goodness. all they ahd to do was shoo me out. Not all asians are conservative on sex. In my opinion, i think that alot of asians start sex early... esp. like gurls and guys who are really like... outgoing and are influenced by sisters and brothers who are like that. I mean, like almost all of the group i hung out with in 6th grade started having 'fun' in 6th grade... YES i know that is disgusting. maybe thass just my school being really gross, but i've heard so many things from my other friends in cali (basically from church) about how their friend's parents dont give a sh!t and they're never home ands tuff, and so they have like all these "gurl and guy" times where they happen to be missing for a while... no more details. basically, i dont agree with this observation completely, but i guess most "typical" asians are. i dont know...

Hopefully you won't marry the type of guy that would sleep around. Of course kids are idiots when it comes to sex, but everyone's gone through it! Well, not everyone. But it isn't the school's job to teach moral values. Just because they hand out condoms doesn't mean people will suddenly start sleeping around and contracting AIDS. There is a certain personality type that "sleeps around," and they will do this regardless. Condom or not. So wouldn't you want to minimize the chance of those "hoes" spreading "AIDS" to your "future husband" by giving them condoms? Giving out condoms doesn't encourage sleeping around... no one is weak minded enough that the concept of protection will choose their personal values FOR them. The person decides this for themselves when they are ready, condom or not.

I agree with TBoltzbabe. I mean, I don't think it's bad that schools distribute condoms because it is not telling kids "Go do sex, here's protection". It's just a way to prevent STDs and pregnancy for those who choose to have sex. It depends on your moral values and stuff. If a person is not planning to have sex, they are not going to get a condom. I mean, it just depends on the person.

well i think it's a good idea to give out condoms; after explaining why you should use it. not to encourage sex, but safe sex. not pressuring people to have sex just because some people do. it's just they're decision. just look at it this way, how many people are already having sex, safe sex? how many are already pregnant and not ready for it? man, they should talk about birth control also..

I acutally odn't think so. A lot of kids wouldn't have sex because mostly they are scared of buying a comdom, or getting caught with one or something. But if thy are just given out around scohol....I think it might possibly encourage them to do it.

school was not only established to teach students to read and write and study. I mean, reason why we study social studies other than learning political stuff... we learn moral values and learn from others' past mistakes.
