I heard long time ago live t.v shows really aren't "live", they're a few minutes delayed. Then this really wouldn't be "live", would it? I'm guessing they're delaying just because something happens and they don't want to show it to the public.
What's your say on this?

I think it depends on how fast data is bein' sent to the televisions. I don't think they're delaying it b/c they want to block somethin' from the public. If they did, they'd prolly put up the technical difficulties sign up or a commercial.
I have satellite and cable and i notice there's a slight difference between the two. Satellite gets things a bit later than cable. I'd hear something on cable and on the same channel on satellite, I'll hear the same thing a few seconds later.

Well, since the Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake incident.. they're from now on delaying huge events like the Super Bowl by 7 minutes (or something)...

Yeah so this delaying thing is actually more of a censorship issue, really...right?

It's a delay for censorship... but the delay doesn't make it live since they're delaying it purposely

But then it wouldn't really be considered live anymore, right?

I remember I was watching the news. It was live and they were interviewing this lady who's kid was being harassed at the park. She started saying what the harasser was saying including swears and such. I think it is live.

When they say live, they mean "as close to real time as we can safely get it". After the Janet Jackson incident, true live tv will be a thing of the past at major events.

if i were a tv producer, i would do the same. say something incredibly embarassing happens and you just know it'll be all over the internet in hours. It's definitely a safeguard for your own dignity.

The point of "live" in my opinion is not contingent upon the few second delay. I think of live as unedited content/message, like it never goes into the editing room to be cut or anything. Live to me means mistakes aren't erased, and every little movement needs to be perfect. You can't really shoot a whole new scene/event in a matter of a few minutes, so I agree with the delay, which is only for censorship of certain things.

It is live, what about the Janet Jackson incident? Gotta remember that one.
It takes a while for the radio waves to travel through the country I guess.

well yeah..they usually delay it a minute or so..i always wondered things like that tho..like on new years..new york is 3 hours ahead of california's time ((where i live)) and when they show the ball dropping it always says "live" in the corner..never "recorded earlieer" or anything like that..but it wouldnt be live if it already happened 3 hours ago in new york..i dont know if anyone gets that..but yeah..i dunno..

i agree, and also if its delayed by only a few minutes things that happen they might not be able to stop the public from seeing. Also they can't really just stop the show and say sorry something happened that you can't see...
