My dad had decided to start monitoring my IM's with a program from his own computer. I had absolutely no idea about this until he closed my internet connection and got mad at me for talking inappropriately (and I wasn't....at all). Not only did this make ME mad, this made him mad as well. We had a heated argument, him saying that he had all the rights to check all my IM's, and I said that this was an invasion of privacy. Now I agree myself on parents having the right to know what their child is doing, but this is going waaaay too far. He slapped me and told me that from now on, he will ALSO be checking my emails and possibly deleting it

Wow. Parents DO have the right and crap but JESUS. He shouldn't control your life like that! It sounds like you can't even talk him out of it... Sorry Sally.

I don't know...I think the new AIM Triton (I had normal AIM before) is causing him to be able to read all the saved convos. I have no idea what the program is or anything -.-
and making a new screen name wouldnt help either
but I have a feeling he's just signing onto my account and not saying anything, so maybe I should log on with another user?

Make a new sn? Maybe that would work. Get back the regular AIM? :shrugs: My dad threatened to do that to me a few times..

oh my god! that is ridiculous. it's not like you're 10 or one of those skanky young girls who think they're all hot and whatever nonsense. i don't think that anyone should have the right to invade someone's privacy so extremely unless they're a criminal or something to that extent.
what does he hope to accomplish by this? there is no need for him to be snooping around your things. what is he going to do next? tap your phone calls? hire a private investigator to follow you around? make you wear one of those tracking bracelet things?
he has to realize that you're old enough and responsible enough to be able to chat and amuse yourself online. you're not doing anything wrong!

ouch man. i know how you feel. i got in so much trouble for saying stuff i shouldn't have on instant messaging. maybe you could talk to your mom to persuade him to ease up his actions? i mean, these parent relationships should build on trust, and what he's doing isn't helping at all.

Wow. He doesn't sound like the most trusting person. I would definitely have a calm, reasonable talk with him. Let him know that you feel violated and that you're shocked that he can't trust you enough to let you talk on the internet without him reading everything you say. Unless you've done something to lose his trust, then that's a different story. Try to reason with him.

That is crazy!!!
You need to try to uninstall that program...
or trick him.
Pretend to IM your frineds saying that your dad is awesome and you never will disappoint him then maybe he'll uninstall the program
you could also get a new sn and a new email address

I remember my mom doing that to my sister when she was younger with a program called cyber-nanny. My sister got so mad and it was all down hill form there. After an EXTENDED argumen my mom thought it was time to give my sister some privacy note: my sister was 17...

you father slapped you for defending your right to privacy? i know he might have the best of intentions for you but that's going too far. i would simply not talk to my father if he did that. he's snooping around, he can find out for himself. and i honestly believe, no matter who it is, if a person doesn't trust you, you shouldn't trust them.
ask your father what exactly you did wrong. tell him that he isn't allowed to see your conversations even if he's your father. let him know that you respect his authority as a parent but he has to respect you in return to receive that respect. don't raise your voice at him or curse. talk calmly.
if that doesn't work, give him (and your mother who seems to support this) a taste of their own medicine. butt into their lives and invade their privacy. like read their mail and rifle through their drawers/computer. i know that sounds horrible but that's my character.

my dad is just like yours!
everything that i do, everytime that i send in an IM, every website i got to, every email that i send, he tracks them down.
i got slapped tons of time by him, and i dont even care if he finds this.

all i do is sit there and let him find everything. he's my dad, he know everything and i cant do anything about it...
dont worry, you're not alone.

^ maybe you should uninstall triton and reinstall your old AIM. you could also add a password so only you can get into your user.
