You know those questions that don't exactly seem to have a clear cut response? How are you and how do you respond?

I have an example. The question, "What's up?" The typical answer is, "Nothing." I was on the phone with a friend and he asked me that and I said, "I'm just driving, you?" and he says, "I didn't ask what you were doing, I asked what's up." But isn't that basically the same thing or am I a complete idiot? He then continued to ask me again, I gave him the typical answer, and then he asked me what I was doing. Doesn't that seem redundant? What's the point of asking if you're expecting to hear "nothing"?

So, how do you respond to "What's up?" or "What's good?" or any other questions that have somewhat unclear responses?

Hmm I think I see what you're talking about. I usually respond, "Nothing much, you?"

hahahaha...i automatically say nothing, then i continue to explain what i really am doing which really isnt nothing

example:
"hey, whats up"
"nothin...just blowing up the world and drinking a bit of wine"

or something liek that

whats up is one of those questions that people seem to want a generic programmed response to. You say to someone, "whats up?" They say nothing. then they go, "hold on, I'm about to beat the boss in this game." Obviously something was up. Drives me nuts. Just say the roof of your car. Or better yet, the sky. I mean, to me, "whats up" is the same as saying "whats up with you". Or "what are you up to". So you responded correctly. But most people don't get it. I hear that all the time as well. Just stab em. :)

I don't like answering this question especially when I hardly know that person at all. If it's a friend, then it's okay; but someone I don't know? No.

lol this happens to me all the time, but I usually take the "I'm doing this and that" as a correct response. Because what the person is doing is kind of ..what's going on.

My friends and I have made a game of "let's see who can say what's up first so I don't have to respond?" What's up, for me, is pretty open-ended. There are usually several things I'm doing, and I'd say so, but it doesn't seem to fit "what's up". "Whatcha doin" seems better to me.

I usually just say nothin, You. Which usually is followed by another nothing or sometimes a nothin just kickin it.

Well, I usually say "Not much" or something like that, unless there's something that I want to say or if something new happened in my life.

That's exactly what I do.

I just say "Nothing much"

It depends on the person. If I know they want a clear-cut response to what I'm doing, I tell them. If they're the type that don't talk much in conversations, I just make it sweet and to the point.

I say you punch your friend in the face and go, "AND THAT'S WHASSUP!"

I'll either say nothing, you?
Or just something random about what's around me at the moment.

But then what is the point if you're always going to say nothing when it's not really true?

To me, what's up and what are you doing is the same thing.

I hate when people ask me "what's up?" during school like in the halls. I'll usually respond with something like "um, going to [insert subject of class here]" or something.

But if they are expecting a "nothing much" answer, I'll ask them what they're doing after that to make conversation for the hell of it.

I dont like that question.
My friend asks me Whats up? I'm like nothing. Cant they see what im doing? so why do they have 2 say Whats up?

But the other whats up on the internet is different. Becuz u cant see the other person.

I prefer saying "How are you?" But yeah..."wassup" is just used as a greeting now. I just respond with "hi".

LMAO!!! that reminds me of myself back then. I came in class late and my Teacher said "Emmanuel, what's up?" I just nodded my head up and said "What's up!" then he said "No, what's up" I looked at him in confusion and said "what's up!" That happened for like 5 more times and then he finally said "why are you late?!"

I don't say what's up anymore....err... that much. I say horse raddish, "wassabi"

I've been in a situation like that. Sometimes, people want you to respond with what you are actually doing. Others,though, want you to respond with "nothing." or "nothing much". It's confusing. I usually respond with what I'm doing because to me, "what's up?" and "what are you doing?" are almost the same questions. Other times, when I know the person will say "nothing" If I asked them that question, I just say nothing.
