Choking game
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The choking game is not a game in the traditional sense but a method of self-asphyxiation whereby a person cuts off the supply of oxygen to their brain for a "rush" or "high". Knowledge of the activity has been passed around schoolyards, typically between 9- 14 year olds, for years.

The choking/fainting game became prominent in the news in early 2005 when a number of children across the United States died from self-asphyxiation, including Gabriel Mordecai of California, Chelsea Dunn and Dalton Eby of Idaho, Dylan Blake of Florida and Jason Linkins of North Carolina to name just a few.

The origin of the activity is unknown, but versions of the "game" have been reported for generations. One method was to cut off blood flow to the brain using one's own hands. This was achieved by pressing your thumbs against the carotid artery. The blood loss to the brain would cause the person to pass out for a moment at which time their arms would fall limp and blood flow would be restored. The resulting rush of blood to the brain would cause tingling and a slight sense of euphoria for a few seconds. Another method was for the participant to hold his or her breath while another person pressed the base of their hands in the area of the heart, thus stopping blood flow.

The method that came to prominence in the news media involved the use of a ligature. An accomplice would hold the belt or rope around the victim's neck. When they were seen to go limp, the accomplice would then release the pressure. If the airflow is restricted for too long or if the victim is alone using a ligature to apply pressure, brain damage and death can occur. Children are misled in believing that this activity is safe because it is not illegal.

Within the past two months, I had encounters with this game like three times. Once, it was when my friend told me that she played a version of the Pass Out Game. Another was on a news clip and another was in a magazine article. It's freaking me out because it seems more and more news stories are popping up about it. Like all kids do it or something.

Click for an article about the Choking Game.

Have any of you played it? Watched someone play it? Or even know about this game? Is anyone else freaked out by this?
wind&fire
idiots... killing brain cells..
salcha
I should try that before a test.
Looow
YEAH.

I heard about that a long time ago. My sister's friend was giving me a longgggggggggggg talk about how I shouldn't do stuff like that.

I think it's stupid.
Solipsist
I played that a couple of times in 8th grade.
You don't pass out for a long time though

I used to play that in 7th grade. A bunch of girls would go into the bathrooms and faint one another. I was particularly good at it. But i was stupid back then. And i dont do it anymore, and i advise others not to.

Also in 7th grade, they fainted me too much ( like 7 times in a row ) and I passed out, went to the hospital, woke up and was temporarily blind for a while. A few girls were suspended for it later on that month or so.
Looow
Bella, I'm going to slap you next time I see you at the mall.
Gigi
That...I've never even heard of that before. But it's scary. It's freaky how people can say that choking themselves is a "game" and you can get high off it.

Now that I think of it, though, drugs and alcohol, smoking. It's all the same. We're doing things that harm our bodies in the short and long term in order to get a very, very short term high? That's so...dumb. That's so sad.
Hiphop d[-_-]b
Suzy Q - Pshhh.
Lorena - ): I dont think i should meet you at the mall anymore Lol. xpp

Heey, i said i stopped.
mzbbc
nooo i never heard of that before. haha but i've played "pass the pain" before. rolleyes.gif yes i'm so daring.
Libertie
Reminds me of an episode of CSI.. or one of those tv shows, it may have been something else.

Weird though, and definitely scary. My brother's nine, I don't want to think about that. :(
The_AZN_Godfather
Never heard of that before.

Sounds like drugs. Except a lot faster results.
silver-rain
Hmm, I read an article on that in Seventeen.
Yeah, I agree, it's a stupid 'game.' I would never want to play it.
iced__cappucino
thats so..fking...retarded. and i remember seeing one of my friends do that. its so stupid, words cant explain it.
liquidize
i did it before LOL
yeah there were a group of guys doing it and one fell! HAHA
xosteffanator
I read an article about his in seventeen
Except there it's called the pass out game
It was so sad-a kid died from it
sprezzatura
Losers. This "game" is just...too stupid.
ANG33ZY
wow a choking game. -_-

reading how you're supposed to press your thumbs against the carotid artery to play. gives me the shivers.
stephinika

A few of my friends who fainted others ( We called it fainting ) said that if theyre head hits the ground while they were unconscious, that it could cause even more permanent damage, actual unconsciousness and possibly amnesia.
fameONE
I tried that in the 8th grade and didn't really know what it did. I passed out, woke up and whooped the kid's ass.
Stephire
:/
I've heard of it, but I've never seen anyone "play" it.
The only games they "play" like that here is the ABC game.
Which hurts, a lot.
That's really....sad.
Nugget
I think I read something about this on Seventeen Magazine or some magazine. This girl told this other girl about it and then that girl was telling other people about it because she loved the feeling and no one would play because they thought it was dangerous so she used a belt to play herself, but she never woke up and she was all purple. Dead in her closet. A lot of girls died from that game. Crazy.
_sarcastic_
^me too, i just read it last night. i think the magazine was seventeen.
sounds really scary, i wouldn't do it
mouse_3k
I saw this girl who loved playing this game on Dr. Phil. its stupid and retarded and people who play tht game deserve to die if they are just dangling dead infront of them and taunting it.
jennyjenny
I read this in the summer. It was on like the front page of the paper because some kid in another town like, died and ended up hanging himself. It seems so stupid.
Rachel
This is so sad. There have already been enough kids dying from this "game".
mipadi
Seriously WTF? blink.gif
-lana
I've never heard of this.. it doesn't seem like a game I want to play either.
Retrogressive
...why does this remind me of Heathers?

Then I read in a magazine about some girl dying from it.
I wouldnt do it.
ParanoidAndroid
I caught my friend play it with this delinquent in the girls bathroom...i ended up slapping them senseless for worrying me so much
cLinT_wEStw0oD
i would never trust anybody with my limp, clueless, knocked out body. especially not my friends.

-Please use a more appropriate choice of words. thank you-
StarryEyedSurprize
People used to do it at my school all the time. I haven't seen anybody do it this year though.
Aoiro
I've tried it a few times, and two of my friends tried it.
But they didn't make it too serious to pass out.

I haven't heard/seen anybody do that recently though.

yes.yes. i heard that story. my teacher gave us alecture on that story and the whole concept. that game scares me. i am too very daring.. shifty.gif but this is just crazy. i really want it to stop because i dont want my younger brother to get into that stuff.. it scares me. since i have and will always have a twin brother.. its like we have each other to tell us whats wrong a right.. but my little brother.. only has himself.. and his friends could lead that in a bad wayy. so i`m wayyyyy against it. oh and Bella im on your side. i know once a quitter always a quitter.. haha Suzzette & Lorena!
5ayuri
I hadn't even heard of this.
It's not something I would play. Kinda freaky.
Smoogrish
It's completely stupid. Not only that, but I heard it was possibly addictive - because after they've gotten the high once or twice, they can't stop wanting to get that "winderful high" again and again. And there've been several deaths too.. it's terrible. mad.gif I don't really understand the fun in practically choking yourself and passing out. It's just as bad as doing drugs.
smearedmakeup
I just did that not too long ago. blink.gif
I did it because I liked the feeling, but now.. I don't think I like the feeling anymore.

Cassie! Why? Don't.
faded23
it kind of reminds me of the beginning of 13 where they're getting high off the dust off and punch each other and stuff and the one (Tracy?) passes out
