but all I managed to do was delete the entire navigation box and I'm super confused!

Yeah.. that code is for removing the box with the navigation stuff in it, but it's okay that you deleted it.. It's easier to customize your navigation when you do it yourself than if you try to edit the navigation box they give you.

So, what were you wanting to have there?
