yes, im living in vancouver, and for me its totally awesome [but then we get more homework later, to make up for lost time].
but for the grade 12 its totally making their studies bad. my cousin whos in grade 12 has been bitching how it sucks and all. it probably wont be long before it ends.

I wouldn't get too excited. You'll have to make it up sooner or later.

^ Well, usually teachers just cut off the not-so-necessary stuff if the strike is long enough.
The joys of no school aside, the teachers are being incredibly unreasonable. On their TV commercials to rally up support, all the teachers talk about is how much they want to improve school for the children of BC. Yeah, my ass they do.
"We want to decrease class size so children can have more one on one attention! We want to reduce the amount of mentally-challenged children in regular classes!" and then they casually slip in, "it wouldn't hurt to increase our salary by, oh, I don't know, FIFTEEN PERCENT."
They are all hypocrites.

Most likely if the strike continues for over a week, then you would have to make up the classes in the summer.

^ The last time we had a strike, we didn't. The teachers just didn't teach the less important parts of the curriculum.

is this the whole improving the school thing?
yeah, i hear that a lot from my school.
you're going to have to make it up sooner or later in the summer (unless you go all year).

Yea I had a strike and luckily, it ended after two weeks, like RIGHT on the end of the 2nd week. Any more, and summer school would've happened.
Well... I'm in high school now, so it all doesn't affect me anymore.

Yeah... I'm in grade 12, so I'm personally pretty screwed right now. Teachers have assigned us 3 weeks worth of homework, but still... I can't find it in me to motivate myself when I don't have to go to school =|

I'm in grade 11 but I have 3 grade 12 provincial courses so it won't be good if the strike continues too long. =(

why are the teachers on strike?
They're a freaking
union, that's why. I don't even know why the government lets themselves be shook up so often by unions now anyway. At the first sign of disapproval or dissatisfaction, all the unions do is go on strike.
Apparently, the teachers are pissed at the number of children in classrooms, which is getting larger and larger each year. It goes to like, 35 now? I've never had more than that. I don't know why they're complaning. "Omg, 4 less children in classes, that's like, CHRISTMAS for me, SO LET'S GO ON FREAKING STRIKE!"
Also something about mentally challenged kids in regular classes...something about having too many. Or something.
And the last and most important (although most subtlely mentioned) reason is
FIFTEEEN PERCENT INCREASE IN SALARY.Yup.
I just remembered that I have my Socials 11, English 10 and Science 10 Provincials this year....
CRAP.

interesting...but i don't think that's exactly a good thing. it hurts the school, the students, and the teachers themselves. i remember that a long time ago in U.S. history, when all the Boston police went on strike, the government just fired all of them and hired new ones. that might just happen again.

Oct 13 2005, 10:15 PM
Well, what you have to understand right now is that the teachers are running an ILLEGAL strike. The government could've arrested all these teachers on the picket lines, but that's way too many teachers. Let alone FIRE them all.
Today the BC Supreme Court ruled that all the teachers would NOT receive pay from their union when they're on strike, because it's totally unreasonable to be paid for doing something illegal. In addition, the British Columbia Teachers Federation is having all their assets frozen, and the judge has appointed monitors to make sure no offices, websites, telephones, faxes, etc, are used in order to push this strike further.
I say they should've given the teachers a big fat fine, but NOOO.
