Well, my boyfriend was in chorus last year and he told me that the teacher didn't like it when students drank milk for lunch because their singing wouldn't be as good...

It coats the throat or something.
My music teachers have all said that. My middle school teacher has won best music teacher in california for like 12 years in her job . Shes in the paper a lot for our choir and showchoir, so im sure shed know about it.
My highschool teacher hasnt told us anything about dairy yet but im sure she will. My highschool choir is one of the best ;D
im a choirhead.

Yes, dairy can affect your singing voice. It's not cool, coffee can affect it too...I suggest before your audition you drink some tea with honey, it really clears up your voice! and if the auditions are early in the morning, get up extra early and start practicing...you probably should start singing softly with scales and then move on to your audition piece :)
Another tip for this audition, Go in there and sing with confidence. And try not to be intimidated by the others in there, just focus on your piece! SMILE! put your own personality in it, and of course have fun :)
Good luck on this audition!

I remember hearing that last year in chorus. I'm not sure if it's true or not... I'll ask my choir director, though.

Yea, i get phlegmy if I drink milk before I sing. I never liked dairy in the first place so I rarely had that problem, but most singers won't drink milk a couple days before they have a gig.

yeah as people have mentioned before it causes your voice to sound very nasal, which is very rarely a good thing and on higher notes your voice to make a clicking sound.
honey isn't good for it either, it coats your throat as well and tea dries out your throat. Just drink water as hot as you can, it not only loosens up your vocal chords but it soothes your throat as well.
