i see what you guys are talking about. but i dunno about about that "better person" talk. Like i dont see how it makes you a better person if you listen to different music. To me it doesnt make sense but would you care to explain?

What i think is that if you listen to indie music you have your own mind but i dont think your better than anyone else out there. i think that is kind of wrong to say that people are better in my opinion just for listening to different music.
In my list of songs there is half an half. Music and people that people never ever heard of like German, Korean and very unpopular music, its just what i like.  And then there is the occasional popular radio music. As for other media like movies, i watch a lot of unheard of movies. those low budget movies, there are some out there that are really good, then the others are really badd . lol

My point is that there is a certain elitism that goes along with "going against the crowd." A lot of people who listen to indie music use it as a status symbol, to show that they somehow are better because they have their own mind and don't listen to mainstream music. The way I see it, the idea is similar to some anti-iPod users: many rail against the iPod simply because they consider those who use one "mainstream" and thus beneath them; but then, when one examines the situation, one can see that such a user is only following a counter-culture ideal, which isn't terribly original or well-thought-out, either.

Naturally not everyone who doesn't use an iPod is trying to be "anti-conformist," just as many who use iPods are not conformist.

The indie music thing is a tangent that was used to support a claim.
