What's this? Google has Wifi?
Does anyone know if there are any hotspots in New York?
(if there was already a topic on this... kindly lead me in the right direction, please)

Google WiFi is only available in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's essentially a test run. They had a even smaller test run in Downtown San Francisco in April.
But everyone can download Google's secure VPN. This makes all your data encrypted when it goes out to the internet.
Don't worry, coverage will expand eventually.

It's short for wireless fidelity and denotes a wireless network.
