i don't kow what the different coords are for. could someone who uses them in their layouts help?

There's a whole tutorial in Webdesign on this. It's quite accurate, too. Easy to get.

You can use many different picture editing/creating applications like Adobe's Creative Suite (Photoshop and ImageReady), Paint Shop Pro by Jasc, or the old-school Paint by Microsoft.
