Teen is shot and killed in dispute
Oakland police searching for suspect in death of young female peacemaker

OAKLAND — A petite 16-year-old "peacemaker" was shot to death late Saturday night by a man she had convinced just moments earlier to stop firing a gun during a dispute with other young people, police said.
Police said Nancy Nguyen, who weighed just 88 pounds, died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police searched for the gunman Sunday.

"She absolutely was trying to be a peacemaker," homicide Sgt. Brian Medeiros said.

At the Nguyen home, dozens of friends and family members gathered to mourn the teenager, who would have begun her senior year at Oakland Technical High School's Health and Biotechnology Academy on Monday.

Kim Nguyen, 21, said her sister Nancy — youngest of three sisters and a brother — was a good student who loved to shop and collect "AirJordan" sneakers and anything that featured the "Dora the Explorer" cartoon character.

"It's really hard," Kim Nguyen said, tears streaming down her face. "We loved her so much."

Kim Nguyen said the entire family, still struggling with the death of their mother nine years ago, was devastated.

The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. in the 900 block of 52nd Avenue where it dead ends off of East 10th Street, which police said is a gathering spot for young Asian men and women.

About 20 people were present Saturday night, including Nguyen, who had only been there about 15 minutes.

A dispute broke out between members of the group, and it turned into a physical altercation, Medeiros said.

A man police believe Nguyen knew then pulled out a pistol and began firing shots into the air, Medeiros said.
Nguyen confronted the man and convinced him to stop shooting before someone got hurt. But the man was still angry and began arguing with Nguyen, who started crying, Medeiros said.

The man then took her around the corner and after a few minutes members of the group heard another gunshot. They found a dying Nguyen and no sign of the man.

"There is nothing physically she could have done to protect herself," Medeiros said.

Medeiros called the shooting cowardly, said it was very difficult to explain to her father why his youngest daughter wouldn't be coming home.

"How do you explain the savagery of killing a little 16-year-old girl?" Medeiros said.

Nguyen's family emigrated to the United States from Vietnam 18 years ago and now owns a successful landscaping business.


Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the killer's arrest. Anyone with information can call police at 238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 238-6946.

I just asked my friend. She said that Nancy is her dad's friend's daughter's friend(that was confusing).

She told me that she heard that Nancy's 2 boyfriends were arguing and she was in the middle of it, and she got shot 5 times. My friends says she doesn't know if what she heard was true or not..

oh please... those "gathering spots" are usually, obviously very dangerous. we have one around here where all the downtown vietnamese people get together and fight & smoke pot.

she should've been smart enough to stay away. especially if it was a few hours 'til midnight.
stupid actions lead to tragic consequences. lesson learned.
