I'm so bad at this, especially when it comes to my mom because I don't have the heart to tell her that I don't like something when she clearly spent a lot of time picking it out.

She came home with these $500 bags for my sister and I. Super trendy and shiny looking, but really not my style. I mean, my sister immediately was like "no, I don't like it" and took the purse she bought for my grandmother (which was nicer and leather and not so shiny).

I tried "Oh, it's way too expensive" and "I have so many bags, I don't need another one," but she was like "Don't worry, it's a gift! Wear it on special occasions!"

I didn't want to say I didn't like it, so I pretended to love it and told her that I'd prefer a watch because my watch is getting sort of scratchy and she got all excited, returned it, and now I'm going to Movado to pick something out. Lucky break, I guess. I'd prefer for her to save the money, but when she has her mind set on gift-buying it sort of can't be sidetracked.

How do you reject spontaneous stupidly expensive gifts from people? Maybe you just tell them you think it's butt ugly, but I don't like being rude :(

this is why i hate surprises. people usually end up gifting me things i don't like, assuming i will like it and i'm supposed to sit there with a smile and be grateful i got anything at all. you did the right thing, the nicest way to reject someones gift is smile and say you really don't need it but thank you, etc.

you can never lose with gift cards, i don't care how impersonal they are.

This.

I don't really have anything to say about receiving expensive gifts I don't like, but I have something else that annoys me. And maybe it's a silly complaint...

I don't like it when people I'm not really close with get me really awesome birthday presents. I invite them to my birthday celebration because they're fun to hang with but don't expect a gift from, and they show up with tickets to a Broadway show or a concert. The first thought that comes to mind when that happens is "HOLY SHIT, I LOVE THIS PERSON!!" but then it quickly turns to "oh f*ck, now I have to get them an awesome gift in return when I was just hoping to buy them a shot for their birthday."

Yeah, I got a little sidetracked there.

the trenta is stupid. the lid is stupid and big and we don't have anywhere to put them and we don't have bigger shakers or ice scoops and why the hell does anybody need so much tea or coffee anyways? we don't have that many people ordering it here but if they do, it's venti + extra ice.

-_-

and pshhhh. starbucks isn't new and interesting to me anymore. i don't even care enough to complain about work everyday :(

I AM HOWEVER SLOWLY AND SURELY TAKING OVER THE BUFFYVERSE TUMBLR COMMUNITY.

The whedon fandom doesn't have enough people who can make a quality gif.

Doesn't work. I usually get expensive gifts from people who live with me or see me on a regular basis.

That's why keeping it in the closet sucks because eventually they'll ask why you never wear/carry/bring out their gift. I'd just rather them not spend the money.

Hmm, if it's my mom, dad, or sister, I would tell them straight up that I'm super grateful for the gift but it's really something I would not use. I would feel bad for a little bit, but they would understand.

This.

Although if I know that someone is thinking of getting me something ridiculous, I stop it before it happens.

Everyone that knows me, knows to just give me cash. I am too picky to be messed around with.
