do you like it?

"Graphic design =/= Fashion design..."
does that mean they're pretty much the same?

^ =/= is a "not equal" sign, so he's saying that graphic design is not equal to fashion design. Graphic design, however, is probably more related with T-shirt graphic design and not the garment itself, which is what I think you were trying to get at in the original post.

You don't need to go to college for graphic design to be successful in that area, necessarily. The most important things you can have as a graphic designer are work experience and a stellar portfolio. You don't really need formal education for graphic design if you have the will to learn it yourself.

What you need is real-world experience and not the word of some people that you know who say you're pretty good. I know a lot of people who know their way around Photoshop, but none of them would know what they need to do to design say a T-shirt, a website, or a brochure. That's where formal education can come in handy - it'll teach you exactly how to do that - but you can learn that on your own if you want to, and are able to. Work experience helps too when dealing with real-world clients, schedules, deadlines and whatnot.

I can't really help you with deciding your major because that's your own decision, but if you're only going to do graphic design because your cousin says you can design clothing and make a profit and you don't know what else to major in, maybe you should explore your options a bit more.

If you're only majoring in Graphic Design because you don't know what else to major in then I highly suggest you really do some sole searching. I know a lot people pick Graphic Design as a major because they think it's easy or they never really thought seriously about what it is that they want do with themselves so they figure, "Graphic design sounds like fun, and I know Photoshop, yay!" First of all, Photoshop doesn't make you a graphic designer, or even a good designer (not saying you aren't good). There is a whole process involved with designing that has nothing to do with the computer ( I won't in-depth with all that here, but you learn all about this at a good art school).

Second, the average graphic designer isn't making six figures a year, but for those passionate about design, that's not much of an issue because it's not about the money for them. Lastly, graphic designers are constantly being pumped out of art schools every year - I think I read once that over 300,000 graduate every year, so the field is saturated, which makes it's very competitive.

Like Gigi said, you don't need school to be a graphic designer - though you're job prospects a little higher with BFA. You need to be passionate, and willing to constantly learn and compete in a field with so many other competitive designers.

Graphic Design...i wanted to do that too when i was in highschool. I even signed up for it when i was at my local community college(back in florida) but I personal thought TOO MUCH WORK! And i'm lazy, so when i moved to georgia and signed up for another college i just chose CIS networking and micro, and the first day i was in class my teacher told me IF YOU ARE A LAZY PERSON...YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT MAJOR. Because programmers are lazy...and i'm lazy so i found my calling. Your still in highschool you have some time to think about it. If you like computers, there are so many sub catagories you could choose from. Well i don't know if any of that helped by w/e LOl biggrin.gif

Just keep your options open, I know many people who went into art school and later regretted that it was an ALL art school and did not have any other subjects. If you are passionate about graphic design, then take it, but in your OP you sound skeptical. Like Gigi said, Graphic Design is something that dosent require a really high level of education. There are 16 year olds making advertisements and identities on this site and all they use are online tutorials. Graphic Design is a compemtetative field because younger generations will develop new ideas and the younger generations will always be more creative then lets say a 40 year old graphic designer, yes, it is all about exposure, but when your older you tend to stay conservative. I would recommend, if you want graphic design, then double major, have a backup in case and dont go to an ALL art school Keep your options open :]

expect a lot of critiquing for when its time to show the projects in class. don't be bashful. learn to give good critiques. listen to what the teacher says, and also from your fellow classmates.

there was this girl in one of my art classes that didn't want to talk at all. the teacher seemed annoyed. cmon! you're in college!
