I've been hearing some complaints about the forums, mainly about the Interests and Lifestyle forums. I know that a long time ago there was an attempt to reorganize the forums and then Jusun came back and switched them again (or something like that, hah). I've been trying to think of ways to reorganize the community forums. There's something about Academia that just drives people nuts.
I was thinking maybe something like this:
The forums in italics probably aren't getting moved around, but I included them to show you what the layout would look like. Yeah, see how weird it is. I'm not a big fan of a lot of subforums. So how do you guys think the forums in the community center should be organized? |

I've said it before, I don't like writing being in Academia. Most of the writings in that forum are not academic. Actually, no, just find a different name for Academia then I'd be okay with it.

^ in that case, why don't you get rid of Academia entirely?
School can be moved into a "School/Work" subforum under Lifestyle and News can be moved into Entertainment. Writing can then go to Interests. |

^ :( I love anime, but in all honesty, I think the forum should be removed with topics going into either Movies/TV or Books (if the topic is manga based).
I still hate "Academia." It irritates me that News and Books, things that many people enjoy outside of school is lumped into that category. It is NO different than Art. Not even a little different than Art. So if Art can jump, the other two should as well. I suggest renaming "Academia" to something else, like "Humanities" or something like that. I don't really like "Humanities" either but I am having a difficult time coming up with something different. Maybe after more coffee or something. I also think that Relationships should move into "Lifestyles." I just think that things would be more congruent that way. Also, I still don't think that "Video Games" is a good idea. I'm pretty sure that it will end up like anime (to a lesser degree) and the not so booming "Videos." While I'm on the subject of "Videos", shouldn't that be in Entertainment, rather than Interests? edit: Brandon no fair! You edited your post to include the Relationships thing. :p |

The reason (besides the fact that I don't like having a ton of subforums) that I left Videos standing alone and didn't put it in Entertainment is because people post videos that are serious, too, not just funny or entertaining. I think if people were to post serious videos relating to News and Debate that it wouldn't quite fit right as Entertainment
Relationships could go in Lifestyle, but that would make six subforums. I guess it'd be even with Interests then. I dunno why subforums bother me, lol. Academia should be our intellectual forum. Hmm, I need a thesaurus :P |

Writing is akin to Art. If Art moves out of Academia, Writing should, too.
I personally think we should just find a better name for "Academia". |

I think if people were to post serious videos relating to News and Debate that it wouldn't quite fit right as Entertainment This is one reason I don't personally like the Videos forum -- because it makes it seem as though anything with a video should be posted there. I think that Videos that have something to do with News or Debate (or another topic) should, logically, be placed in News or Debate (or whatever's appropriate). |

I think if people were to post serious videos relating to News and Debate that it wouldn't quite fit right as Entertainment Wellll, except that some movies are serious yet they belong in Entertainment. :p I think that essentially, the Video Forum idea was fun but there's no reason why people can't post videos in cooresponding forums. It almost seems like people can post a youtube link and bail, since they're posting in the "Video Forum." I'd much rather see some thought put into posting, along with the video than just flyby post-a-link posting. I feel the same way about News. Merely quoting an article and citing a link only shows that you have an active RSS-type (or Google Reader) mechanism. ;) |

I see where everyone is coming from most definitely, but didn't we make a videos forum because other forums would load faster without all of those videos clogging the topics? If we got rid of videos and just had videos posted correspondingly, wouldn't we have the problem like this again? I totally see what you're saying -- I have an old and pretty slow computer, so the one good thing about the Videos forum is that it keeps all the videos in what place, so I know what topics not to click on. |

Well, Art and Technology could always coexist with News, School, and Writing in whatever forum they are under... In my opinion, it'd make more sense to make Academia an intellectual geared forum than a school/studies related forum.
I see where everyone is coming from most definitely, but didn't we make a videos forum because other forums would load faster without all of those videos clogging the topics? If we got rid of videos and just had videos posted correspondingly, wouldn't we have the problem like this again? That's one of the main reasons I was in support of us adding a Videos forum. And also because people would usually post videos just in the lounge... it's nice to know that you're not going to click on a topic and have to wait for a video to load. The video forum isn't as clear as other forums regarding what topics are posted, but that doesn't mean we have to do away with it. |

I can understand the justification of Videos with respect to loading times.

Okay I've been thinking of ways to reorganize the CC for a while and it just made my head hurt. But what if we move Relationships into Lifestyles, Debate into Academia, and Pictures into... something else. I dk, the forms without sub-forums looks weird to me. As for renaming Academia, I couldn't really come up with something and a thesaurus didn't really help. But wait about Intellect's _________ or something along those lines? Dumb, I know but that's all I could come up with. "/

I think Debate is doing well on it's own. The gray and italics on the outline in the first post were things that I think shouldn't be changed, unless people think they should be. DAMN YOU ACADEMIA! haha, that's the one I'm having trouble with. Can we just call it "Brain Food" or somethin'

Since we can't come up with a name, how about letting a community member come up with a name each month or periodically? Maybe a MoTM perk? A contest prize? I don't know. lol

Oh man, I can just imagine the creative names they'd come up with.
How about we call it "Intellectual Crap" and throw Technology in there, too? |
