Stretching is always good. What kind of back pain is it? Like a muscle ache or more in your spine? I would say use a heating pad, because that's what my brothers do, haha.

I merged your posts. Damn, how long have you been trying to follow this doctors program? Maybe it just needs a little more time for it to get better.
Where's Reidar? He should reply here so I can stop making a fool of myself. |

Stop stretching so much. Spine flexibility should not be emphasized until the spine has stabilized and has undergone endurance and strength conditioning. There is little quantitative data to support the idea that a major emphasis on trunk flexibility will improve back health and lessen the risk of injury. In fact, research has shown that greater spine mobility has been associated with low back trouble.
Stability needs to come before flexibility. Tissue damage results in joint laxity, which stretching further encourages. Stuart McGill, professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo, poses a lot of criticism for many physicians in advocating general stretching/exercise programs without taking into account the individual's specific circumstances. Take that as you will. You should not do any movement that has an emphasis on back flexion after you wake up. Bed rest reduces the applied load (hydrostatic) below the disc osmotic pressure, resulting in a net inflow of fluid that leaves you susceptible to injury. When you lift something, always keep your back in a tight arch. You should never do sit-ups, which throw most of the torque directly onto your back. Here are some sample stability (not flexibility) exercises: |

I remember getting a pamphlet of exercises from my doctor when I found out about my scoliosis but I lost it. I've just been keeping active. Stretching is huge for me. As is a little bit of yoga at home. I also lay flat on my back to straighten it out after any strenuous exercise.

You should never do sit-ups, which throw most of the torque directly onto your back. i haven't been doing sit ups for a long while because of that. do you have any idea of a good exercise to replace that though? i've been looking for ab/"core" exercises that will put the least possible strain on my back for a long time. and thanks for all your other info in your post. |

Janda sit-ups, which remove the problem with regular sit-ups (hip flexor recruitment), and slow, strict crunches. Also, if you go to a gym, full-contact twists. |

princc saii all situpp aintt ginnaa makee himm look lyke dat They're not supposed to. Janda sit-ups are among the most functionally sound because they remove emphasis of the psoas attachment by referring to the principle of reciprocal inhibition, which says that the nervous system relaxes the muscles opposite the ones contracting as a matter of efficiency. More emphasis on the abdominal muscles and less on the hip flexors and back is thereby attained. Also, I recommend this book. The author is Dr. Stuart McGill, a professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo. I've been in contact with him for over a year, and he's a human encyclopedia on kinesiology. |

Commercials tell me aleve helps.
But, my boyfriend has terrible back pain from being a tattoo artist and constantly being bent over. Acupuncture helps if you have insurance to see a trained specialist, but if not drugs work. Vicodens, percocets, even darvocet would probably help you since you don't take drugs. Darvocet won't even f**k you up like most pain medications. |

But yea good luck lol.
